06:31 AM ET 05.15 | No matter what certain round mounds of microphone hounds say, Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle thinks Jason Kidd has plenty left in his 36-year-old tank. "It's hard for me to put into words what he does for our team and how he makes us better," Carlisle said after the Mavericks were eliminated from the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night. "He does so many things to make us a better team and I've made that known throughout the organization."

Carlisle does have a habit of overrating his own players and team, for example saying Dirk is up there with Larry Bird, he does that on multiple occassions.

The Mavs are just going to follow the same path next year if they keep their team together, no doubt there will be some sort of roster movement...there is lots of pressure on Mark Cuban to shake things up.

May 15, 2009  08:23 AM ET

The Mavs are done. They messed up when Cuban traded everyone for Kidd instead of trading Dirk to a) clear some cap space and b) get a REAL post player.

May 15, 2009  08:23 AM ET

Dirk couldn't even guard Kenyon Martin and Nene because he was too busy trying to score from the outside. Good job scoring 40+ in that one game, but the result is still the same: 4-1 Denver.

May 15, 2009  08:26 AM ET

Carlisle did pretty well for his first year and he made do of what he had. The Mavs were not even given a chance to even make it to the playoffs this year. Everybody keep saying that the Mavs suck but yet they win 50 games. There wins are better then the overrated Heat team who seems to have too many excuses (see #1 comment above).

May 15, 2009  08:44 AM ET

I'll start this off just like C. Smith. The Mavs are done! They don't have enough heart to get through 4 rounds of playoff bball. Dirk should stay down low but he just can't do it. Too rough down there for him.

Just as he did with the Pistons, Carlisle tries to control the offense too much. Just let them play! You don't have to teach NBA players to play offense! That's the one thing they already know how to do well.

Actually it was best out of 5. DEnver won 3-2. And how many points did KMart and Nene had? Wasn't Nene guarded by the lowly and useless Dampier?

And here's one more for you. Dirk made it again to the All-NBA FIRST team.

Thats funny you said he "couldnt guard Martin or Nene.." For one nene played the 5 which isnt Dirks man to guard. And two as for Martin he totaled 49 points and 20 rebounds in 5 games. So Im just going to venture out and say Dirk did his job bc he more than outscored him by getting 35 and 12 a game.

Kidd is too old to run a team anymore, he gets burned with his lack of defense. He should be coming off the becnh and would be better served in that kind of role.

May 15, 2009  10:34 AM ET

This is an excellent indication of why the Mavericks will continue in mediocrity. Chauncey picked the Mavericks apart. Just for the record, I told you so. Kidd was thoroughly outplayed in every phase of the game. Carlisle can stick with Kidd all he wants, but the results will be the same. Carlisle should do some reflecting while he's fishing this summer.

May 15, 2009  10:36 AM ET

I think this post may get a rise out of a bunch of people, but it is what it is.

If I had a choice of picking either Kidd (in his prime), or Chancey in his Prime.

I pick Chauncey. Being the leader, and floor general of 2 different teams that has gone to the CONFERENCE FINALS 6 consecutive years. unbelievable, and let's face it he picked Kidd apart.

If the Mavs Choose to retain Kidd's services they are going to need one hell of a trade or free agent pick-up cause the Trailblazers, Rockets, Nuggets, and the Lakers are still going to be beasts.

Agree-
It'll be hard- but if the mavs could find a power big forward
they would be in decent shape

QUOTE(#6):

I do not think Jason Kidd is done. I also do not think he's the player he used to be but he can still lead a team and provide some leadership. I'm not sure what the market will be for his services but I am all for Dallas bringing him back with a reasonable contract. As long as they don't bid against themselves and sign him to anything longer than a 2 year deal the Mavs should be fine.

agree
they have alot of salary through 2011- so unless they are able
to trade damp- unlikely- or if they are gutting the team....
no reason not to sign kidd up for a year or 2 MAX-

Carlisle is one hell of a good coach.

I don't think the Maverick's success had anything to do with Carlisle. I think they went as far as they did because Portland, Golden State, San Antonio, and New Orleans weren't able to meet expectations. Dallas made it in by default.

that's not fair-
default?
I mean granted there were alot of issues with all those teams
but the mavs had their share of issues too-
their 2nd best player (howard) was banged up all year as well-

They did what they had to do- had a nice season & are home now
I think if you asked any rational person if they thought the mavs
would MAKE IT to the 2nd round, before the year- most wouldn't
have thought so......

Guam seriously ur man crush on Dirk is getting really disturbing. I will give in one short sentence what kind of player Dirk is " he a player that every game can score at will sadly he can be scored on by anyone at will as well....and dont tell me that is not true, what is the point of scoring 40 a game if you allow the same???

May 15, 2009  11:40 AM ET

The real culprit on this team is Ericka Tampier. This guy is as useless as they get, and is basically the metaphor for "wasted height and overpaid" plus he has little girly hands and can't handle ANY PASS thrown his way. He is slow and Nene destroyed him this series. There is a clause in Tampier's contract that if you trade him to a team and that team releases him, he only counts 1.5 mil against the cap.....I think it is right under the other clause that says he can play like an overpaid useless pile on the court as well.

Say bye-bye to Damp, Gerald Green Devean George, Jason Kidd, and maybe another useless part. The Mavs need to work some kind of trade for Shaq to plug the middle, I dont think Bosh would work here becuase he plays the same position as Dirk. Other than, FIND A FREAKIN DEFENSIVE OFF-GUARD!!!

I really was talking about Rick Carlisle's body of work opposed to just this year.

Carlisle began his head coaching career with Detroit. During his two-season tenure, the Pistons won 61.0% of their games (100-64) to go with two Central Division championships and one trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. Following his first season as head coach, Carlisle earned the NBA???s Coach of the Year award in 2002.

Carlisle joined Indiana as head coach on Sept. 2, 2003. In his first year, Carlisle led the Pacers to the NBA???s best record (61-21), the most victories in franchise history, the best winning percentage in franchise history and a Central Division championship. He also led the Pacers to the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals. Carlisle, including his previous two seasons with Detroit, became the first coach since Pat Riley to win 50 games and division championships in each of his first three seasons as head coach.

He has coached 7 seasons, went to the playoffs 6 of them, and has won more than 50 games in 4 of the 7.

A lot of people also don't know that he played for Boston for about 3 or 4 years in the mid-eighties.
