Lakers trying not to panic

Slowly, each Laker dressed, their eyes down until they were approached and asked to explain the almost unexplainable. How could it be that a Lakers team that has designs on winning the 2009 NBA championship be so maddeningly inconsistent, so up and down, so good one game and so awful the next? How could it be that the Lakers routed the Rockets by 40 points in Game 5 at Staples Center and then were routed in Game 6 by a still-depleted Houston team? For whatever reason, the Lakers didn't come to play in the first quarter and that doomed them, sending them to a 95-80 defeat Thursday night in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals at the Toyota Center. "For a team that wants to be champs, they are bouncing us around. It's painful," Sasha Vujacic said. "Like inside, outside, they were doing what we were supposed to do." And why is that? "If I knew why, it wouldn't happen," Vujacic said. "For sure, everybody wanted to win. "Let's not forget that last year in Boston, two series they played seven games and they won the games. So, I wouldn't panic right now. I wouldn't throw anything away. I think it's a good test, an amazing test for us." The Lakers were down 17-1 in the first quarter. In Game 4 here last Sunday, the Lakers fell behind by 17 points. They vowed not to let that happen again. But they did. "Really tough to watch," said Jordan Farmar, who played a very steady game with 13 points on five-for-10 shooting. "They did a good job, man. They started off with a lot of energy, being really aggressive and that's how you have to be in these kinds of games. Up 3-2, down 3-2, you have to be aggressive. "They just hit us in the mouth early. Once we were dazed, they kept throwing." The Lakers said they would match Houston's energy and effort this time, and that they would play harder. It turned out to be mostly lip service. "If you can't get hyped for this and ready for these types of games, something is wrong with us," Farmar said. "The energy in the building is great. They kind of fed off their crowd. The shots they were missing the last game they were knocking down here." The last time the Lakers played a seven-game series was in 2006, when they lost Game 7 at Phoenix.

I'm sure they are not trying to panic but they are the only team remaining who are playing below themselves. The Nuggets are playing their best ball of the year, ditto Cavs and maybe Rockets considering their injury issues. Boston is struggling but understandable with their injuries and the Magic are playing like a very talented team but with a lack playoff experience and maybe still a player away from elite status. In other words everybody else is either playing as expected or better than expected. The Lakers are going to have serious issues with the Nuggets or Cavs if they play like they have.

So the big question -
how, Laker fans, would you like to see the team play ??

Do you want Kobe to try and go for 60 ?
or do you want him to 'let the game come to him' - say 22, 6 & 6 ?

No hindsight- do you want kobe to CARRY the team- or -
do you want them to try and play likw a 'team' ?

remeber the celtics last year ? two game sevens first two rounds no big worry here

The so called superb lakers struggling with the wounded rockets missing two stars?
Is it really lovely in lakerland?
Cause as far as I know Lebron is on a mission this year and if the lakers get past the Nuggets the king will go for the kill!

May 16, 2009  09:38 AM ET

The problem is the Lakers back court. Fisher is 35 and Kobe is 31... they miss their rotations and Kobe leaves his man open when he gets picked off a corner rotation. They need to put Ariza on Brooks on defense and let Fisher and Artest sort things out.

agreed. they have no chance against the cavs. if they get to them. if they even get to the nuggets.

I think it's more than the back court. It's seems as if they think they can turn it on when they want to.They seem ill prepared, which is odd.As if they don't know what's coming.I do think if they are fortunate to win this next game, there will be a sense of urgency in the next series.I'm not sure if Kobe actually knows when he should try to take over or not.Because they are so inconsistent. The other teams in the playoffs don't seem to have this problem.Chauncey Billups runs the show,so he knows who to go or when to take the shot himself. The Celtics have so many options.Whether it's the inside game or outside game.It can Pierce or Allen or Big Baby or House or take your pick. One of them is going to make a pressure shot. Orlando just didn't stay with what was working.Cleveland is a different beast all together.

Before this series started,I thought the Lakers would have trouble with the Rockets, they have throughout their playoff history. But I do think they will win this game just on fear alone. The fear of what it will be like for them to sit home and watch the Nuggets play the Rockets.I think this would be as much of a disaster as Golden State beating the Mavericks a couple of years ago.

don't you mean front court?

the transition is darn near complete!, wow! what a series the lakers have gave some great effort! sunday after the lakers get blown out at home, as expected. the lakers will be hurled back into the crisis mode they were in 2 years ago. mitch kupcake has finally seen that gasol simply isnt enough! this week the lakers have all seen that this team is no different than the one kobe was dissing in the mall parking lot. lakers know now that this year is basically a race for second. but did they really think they could deny lebron this year, as late as the first round?
kobes desire to be in golden state has become obvious. he has lost all confidence in phil jackson. phil now has enough material to write a sequel to his first book and is on borrowed time. but the tell-tale sign was when the team unraveled in game 6. fisher, in his reality check lost at how to deal with 'lightning dribble man scott brooks.' gasol in the meantime has remained quite during the transition. only threatning to take a shower on occasion; the days of losing in memphis are being felt. odom is really sore, or has he just said "the heck with it"? mitch cupcake has considered rebuliding this once promising team at the all star break. but is very surprised the team has imploded like it has, so soon. too soon some people claim. sad being you.

The stupid thing is, they haven't played this bad all year long! Bynum did and interview basically blaming the team & the coach for the poor interior D because he didn't play the 2nd half. What a dumb **** Sasha, Fisher & Farmar couldn't hit water from inside a boat.

Sorry to say, but lets just get it over with. If they are going to lose, I'd rather them lose to the Rockets or Nuggets before the Cavs.

Yeah, your right. What time is the Blazers next game?

May 16, 2009  11:24 AM ET

soft as a babie's (you know what).
That and kobe is tired. Hes the only one on that team that has any guts and can play. fish is tough but over the hill, gasol is soft. IF, IF the lakers get out of this one, they better get it together for the nuggets.

LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

Still.

summer league...who mentioned the blazers? this is about the lakers demise. you cant give the blazers any credit for that. lakers did it all by themselves

I mentioned the Blazers because I can't wait to tear their hearts out in the playoff as we have done so many times before. I was waiting to do it again this year; because you promised the Blazers would beat the Lakers in the 2nd round. Blazer fan would be happy to have lost in the 2nd round as they are the perennial under achievers. Banners & Rings are all that matter here.

The Lakers remind me of the San Jose Sharks... they light it up all season when the play is fast and loose, but the minute someone goes 'lock down' on them it all comes apart. Only their talent allows them to overcome it most times, because even making the finals last year they didn't look overly impressive.

And I'm sure this comment will ignite a poopstorm, but how can a team with four guys +/- 7 feet only have a +5 rebounding advantage against a team whose tallest guy is who...Spud Webb? I'm sorry. They can push Luis Scola all they want. This Laker team is soft and unimaginative.

Lakers need a monster in the middle on D... it is just pathetic how the opposition just drives through the middle and nobody waxes 'em... I think if LA continues Denver is going to exploit them big time with Nene, Anthony, and Smith

i never mentioned the blazers sweeping the lakers. i said the lakers would get swept in the second round. they have shown some grit. i never thought the lakers would go to seven games in the second round.
