Knicks prefer Rubio over Griffin

If the Knicks beat the odds and surge to No. 1 or 2, they are expected to take Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, the 19-year-old phenom whom Mike D'Antoni faced in the 2008 Olympics. Blake Griffin, the bullish Oklahoma forward, is the consensus No. 1 pick, but the Knicks prefer the Spanish playmaker. UConn 7-foot-3 center Hasheem Thabeet is the consensus third pick and could fill the Knicks' glaring lack of shot blocking. If they remain No. 8, there's a strong possibility Curry, who plays both guard positions,

Well if you look back the last few years - all the big men that were drafted high have not panned out well. The rules make it harder for big men to excel so and given the instant gratification nature of this era I'd understand why teams will be heistant in drafting a big guy with the number one overall pick.

believe me lost- I agree-
and I've never seen Rubio play- he might be GREAT....
point is - the average crazy fan that GOES to the draft -
if they can take BG & they go Rubio .... ???
NYC better have extra securtity there.

Look I just want to draft someone that's a real Player-
We haven't drafted anyone GREAT since Ewing 25 years ago
- that's DISGRACEFUL-
(lee is nice- but he isn't GREAT)

I have very little confidence in Walsh's decision making. IT is a HUGE mistake to draft a 19 year old European point guard; made even bigger by trading David Lee. If they are able to land a top 3 pick, the smart thing to do would be to go big. The Knicks desperately need a point guard, but there is too much uncertainty in that front line, and they are not a point guard away from contention.

Compared to what? He's good enough that getting equal value for him is a real issue. With this team, he doesn't have to be great if he's irreplaceable. Put a real center around him, and he's a perennial All-Star.

You have to do the sensible thing go big, and also which looks to have more success ( I mean come on Rubio over Griffin?)... Actually, the Knicks need to start way at the top and get a proven NBA gm... Rarely ever do franchises succeed with out the bricks in the right place and the knicks have absolutely no foundation... this thread and this discussion proves that...

I don't believe this article - it sounds like more Post fiction. Not only Blake Griffin give you skill, size, and athleticism, but he has the work ethic and a mean streak. Griffin will not only be an All-Star power forward, he might turn out to be the best power forward in the league. Duncan, Garnett, Brand, and Nowitzki are aging. The next generation is Bosh, Boozer, and Amare. You combine those three and you get Griffin. It's probably better for the league that the Knicks don't draft him. D'Antoni's system might give him some bad habits.

It depends on the system in place. Gone were the days where all a point guard had to do was dump the ball to the sitting ducks in the paint. If we had a star point guard in D'Antoni's system last season we would have made the playoffs. The Knicks picked up Sene who showed signs of being a defensive presence so it looks like the right pieces are in place. But lets cut out this nonsense - the Knicks won't win the draft...

The pay would be about the same for either player. Besides it is not like Rubio is a not a lottery pick. He is considered number 2 for a reason, he is really good. I could easily see a few teams select Rubio over Griffin such as GS.

If you need a PG, you take Rubio, since a great PG is harder to find than a great inside scorer. Look at Chi, Utah and NO and see what a potentially great young PG can do to a team. The only bad PG selected this high was Jay Williams and he was not a good player due of injury.

May 17, 2009  11:28 AM ET

Look, they're not getting the no. 1 pick so it's a mute point really.

Rubio From NBAdraft.net:

"I have thought about it a lot and think the best comparison to past-present NBA players would be the best of both Walt Clyde Frazier and Steve Nash" T

There is one problem that may cause an issue, he just injured his hip. I do not know how serious it is but assuming it is no big deal, Rubio will be tremendous player.

May 17, 2009  11:43 AM ET

I've seen this kid play and good future is ahead of him. He's a stealing machine, a glue guy. Good floor awareness, good shooting and has the quickness and speed to run with the rest of NBA PGs. D'Antoni has strong affinity when it comes to drafting or working with international players so if they end up grabbing the 2nd pick, no doubt Rubio but 1st pick I'd still pick Blake Griffin.

If the knicks get the number 1 pick they won't be paying him pennies. guaranteed. that is silly. That and there are two chances they are going to get Lebron: slim and none. and slim is leaving town.

Its always great when people write things and have no clue. This will be the first guy crying if Lebron left Cleveland whether he ends up in New York, LA, Chicago or wherever that it was a conspiracy

I've never seen Blake Griffin go toe-to-toe with Kobe, LeBron, Dwayne Wade, and Dwight Howard for an Olympic Gold Medal. Ricky Rubio is the goods. Watch the Gold Medal game Beijing '08.

May 17, 2009  12:09 PM ET

the knicks are the raiders of basketball

May 17, 2009  12:26 PM ET

hmmmmm a point guard that can run and gun and plays no defense so hes just a younger steve nash whatever i would take the bigger blake griffin this guy is raw talent

May 17, 2009  12:27 PM ET

If you have seen highlights of ricky, you would know that he would fit perfectly into D'Antoni's system. Film shows that he plays like steve nash. And if I remember correctly, nash excelled in D'Antoni's run n' gun style of play.
