Nets want to deal Yi

Coming off a season when he was demoted from the Nets' starting lineup to the bench because of his lack of production, Yi Jianlian might have played his final game in New Jersey. Team sources say the Nets are interested in trying to deal the 7-foot small forward they acquired from Milwaukee last summer for Richard Jefferson. "They're talking about moving him," said a source. Yi's struggles to improve his defense, rebounding and passing under Lawrence Frank didn't sit well with GM Kiki Vandeweghe, who engineered the deal with the Bucks. Yi averaged 8.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 23 minutes per game, but was often privately criticized for looking only to shoot.

"struggles to improve his defense, rebounding and passing "

lol...so in other words he stinks ?

I'm not a Yi fan- but a 7' guy that can already shoot and is only 21
has got to have some value- he's movable, his contract is not bad
If I were Jersey- I wouldn't just give him up for a bag of balls

I thought the guy was supposed to help generate revenue by drawing Asian fans and making the Nets big in China. Those numbers are decent for a second year player but who knows what the real reason is... maybe the Nets just want to shed salary.

he only makes like 3-4 mil....that's nothing
& they will have a reasonable amout of payroll past 2010 (25mil)

Yi's biggest problem is that the Nets were looking for a starter at the position. He's young and can contribute, but he is what he is. The good news is that there will always be a place for him, because someone will take a chance on him.

May 17, 2009  10:44 AM ET

The question is what this guy is worth right now?? Despite his numbers, he's terrible. He scores a few times early on, then disappears late in the game. Plus he's as soft as they come. Doubt the Nets are going to get anything real valuable for him, but its worth a shot.

He's not as bad as the article sounds and neither is his defense. The kid does have potential because of his combination of size and skill. He'll end up playing the 4 spot full time, just like Nowitzki has. It might behoove him to reach out to Dirk for a trainign regimen. The Knicks should take a look at him. He's one of the big men - Nowitzki, Odom, Okur, Bargnani, etc, - that would go well in D'Antoni's system.

I think New York would be begging to get him for a low price so he can backup Al Harrington or David Lee.

May 17, 2009  12:49 PM ET

Yi was overrated ever since he came to the league and he has not proven his worth. He thought that everything would be handed to him on a silver platter. That is the major problem for Yi. Yi needs to work harder then ever and he needs to start showing some consistency when he gets back to the preseason.

May 17, 2009  12:51 PM ET

He's 7 feet tall. Unless he is an absolute albatross on the floor, someone will give him a chance if the Nets no longer think he's worth it. As the saying goes, you can't coach size. Everything is coachable and he could be decent if he isn't already, which I guess this article is saying.

LOL wasn't him who got fradted and refused to play because the team was in a small market? Heh. now we see that he is not that good and worse of all, is not improving...
Just get rid of him. we don't need a new primadonna

May 17, 2009  12:58 PM ET

Not a big fan of this guy. But he certainly has some skills and height and youth. It is not gonna hurt you, Nets top brass, to give him one more real chance. It's not like you are looking win a championship before VC retires or something. So, keep the young guys like Harris and Yi with potential, and try to go from there.

May 17, 2009  01:11 PM ET

Give him time to develop, though. He's barely been allowed to develop...

May 17, 2009  01:15 PM ET

He can shoot, that's it. The Chinese Andrea Bargnani.

AB averaged over 15 points this year and REALLY started
to improve nicely as the season went on.
- and Yi is (reportedly) 2 years YOUNGER

- no way the nets simply 'waive' him or anything ridiculous like
that- and they aren't going to be taking back contract-
so IF he is moved it will be for another 'disappointing' player
just to switch scenery.

I've seen Yi play- he plays soft...but I am not sure whether it's
because he's YOUNG or he's just not that good....
the nets have him relatively cheap for 2 more years-
no reason to make a rash move

Come to boston well give you big baby and pruitt.

May 17, 2009  01:23 PM ET

Boston can develop him.

I saw film after Yi was drafted by MIL, and Yi was the SF, it was Yao 7'6" Center & some other big 7' 1" chinese guy at the PF

That was former NBA player Wang Zhizhi - another soft, 7-foot, 3-pt shooter.

May 17, 2009  02:55 PM ET

SOFT SOFT SOFT SOFT thats why they're tryin to deal him. The dude doesn't like contact.. if this were YMCA basketball he would be kick ass.... WHen KiKi who was never "tough" as a player thinks you are soft.. damnnn u must be charmin.. two ply!!!!

May 17, 2009  03:59 PM ET

We should have never got gave up R.J.....V.C; -D.H.;-R.J and Lopez...Come on...but now we are starting from the beginning. I say we make a deal for the number one pick. Try for Lebron and we are right back in the mix of things.
