LeBron would consider Cavs extension

The Cavs can offer LeBron James a contract extension on July 18, the three-year anniversary of when he signed his last deal. I expect them to do so and LeBron told me back in December that he'd consider it. But unlike the Heat, who have made their expected extension talks with Dwyane Wade public, I expect the Cavs to keep the proceedings private. Ultimately to increase his flexibility, I don't think James will re-sign this summer no matter what the Cavs do this season. If LeBron does decide to play the current contract out, turning down the extension will be received as big news in some corners and many will interpret it as a sign he wants to leave, even if that is not the case. So the Cavs won't be looking to make a big deal about it. While we are on the topic, there is also another option LeBron has that many seem to forget. He can pick up an option in his contract for the 2010-11 season at any time and push the decision back another year.

"The Cavs can offer LeBron James a contract extension on July 1....... I expect them to do so"

lol- no sh ! t sherlock....
what do you think they'll say > nah, we'd like to wait another year
to see if this guy isn't a fluke ???

Obviously Ferry and his crew will be careful to not irk Lebron's camp. Lebron's business people have made it clear they'd like wait to explore all options which simply means signing an extension this summer is not their priority.

If I was Lebron I'd just wait for the simple pleasure of being wined by all these owners and seeing what business prospects their teams and cities have to offer. He can always come back to the Cavs so why rush it.

he's not leaving and he will get a ring this year

LeBron is "milking" this contract situation for all it's worth. Personally, I don't like it, and it has become a distraction. He could display a lot more class by making his intentions known, as opposed to holding the Cavs hostage for the next 2 years.

Totally disagree, why should he show his cards. Cleveland might not want to spend money and improve the team for next season if they do not win this year. This will be a deciding point with LBJ say what you want but there is no reason for him to jump to another team if that particular team is worse than the current one. THat is why I have such hard time beliving that he wants to go to Knicks. I belive that Bosch will be comming over to play with LBJ in 2010.

Sorry for mispelling too early in the morning for me.

$ or championships? That's the answer as to whether he stays or goes. Right now, due to my short-attention span I'm enjoying this run (and hopefully next year's run) for the trophy. Personally, I don't think he's leaving but we'll find out soon enough...

LeBron may have to decide sooner than he wants. The current economy and the as-yet-unknown CBA may force him to 'lock-in' a favorable b-ball contract. As long as he continues to include performance bonuses in his endorsement contracts (e.g. the MVP bonus from Nike), I doubt that he'll leave much $ on the table.

The writer expects the Cavs to offer an extension to LeBron huh? Does he use Captain Obvious as his name when he writes articles?

May 17, 2009  01:13 PM ET

It all depends to this season's result.
If the Cavs win the championship this year, he could only opt out of his actual contract to sign a new one with more zeros. After all, why leave when you're still 24 and you have the money and a ring?
But IF THEY DON'T...

May 17, 2009  01:25 PM ET

Lebron just wants to make sure Gilbert and Ferry don't pull a Sarver before he signs a new deal.

May 17, 2009  03:12 PM ET

After this years draft and free agency is complete Lebron will assess where the Cavs stand and decide his future. If some team makes major moves and he sees no chance for the Cavs to win he may leave. If the Cavs keep spending and improving the team he will most likely stay. He's just waiting to see how it plays out.

Chances are he's all along been planning to stay, but he's just generating interest...

why can someone not exercise all the options of his contract without being a labeled a distraction or a ungrateful or selfish person or even worse keep a team and city hostage what a bunch of BS this is a business first and he has done more for cleveland with the fans coming back, the team overall success and of course the huge revenue.....than they have done for him....so let him be and hope he wins a couple of rings for cleveland before he makes the decision to leave or not....
