Five weeks after the conclusion of the Avalanche's season, Tony Granato officially still is the head coach. But perhaps not for long. Former Avs star Patrick Roy has been offered Granato's job and is mulling over the offer, according to multiple NHL sources who are close to Roy. The Hall of Fame goalie could not be reached for comment Sunday night, and the Avs had no comment about the possibility of Roy replacing Granato. Granato has not yet been told he's out of a job. Roy, the co-owner, general manager and coach of major-junior hockey's Quebec Remparts, has made no secret of his desire to move into NHL coaching at some point. He met 10 days ago with Avalanche officials to discuss the possibility of rejoining the organization.

He was pretty successful in juniors, but the question will be whether or not he can function without a goon for a goalie.

His first move will be to hire Mario Trembley as his assistant.

Agreed

Couldn't find a picture of Roy with the Avs I guess.

I think this is a bad idea, for no other reason than the fact that Roy isn't far enough removed from this dressing room to be the coach. He played with almost half the players he is now going to be coaching, for crying out loud, so how is he supposed to be an authority figure? Players have a hard time adjusting to Ass't coaches taking over head coaching jobs because they tend to get close with the ass't, what do you think will happen if its an ex-teammate? While I'm sure Roy has a much stronger personality/presence than Granato does, how many times are the Avs going to experiment with a coach before they decide to bring in an experienced name?

"according to multiple NHL sources who are close to Roy."

Who are these "sources?" His hairdresser and mailman?

How do you figure half the team? Roy's last season was 02-03. The only players around then were Sakic, Foote, and Hedjuk. I think this move could work for the simple fact that the roster is so young. Roy's been coaching major junior and a lot of the Avs players aren't too far removed from that level. Plus, if he coaches anything like he plays, then he won't settle for the kind of performances we saw this year. I will say that success will rest on the ability of the Avs to bring in a legit goalie, but I do like bringing in Roy.

I think that it could work, but what worries me is the fact that the Avs don't have a goalie. How will Roy react when some scrap-heap scrub that they pick up isn't as good as he is? We'll see. I do think that he'll be a pretty good coach, though. He even has a full endorsement from Scotty Bowman. What more do you need?

I can't see Roy there with Sakic. Sakic would have to retire, and shouldn't they get a GM first?

Bingo!

i don;t think roy will do all that well as a coach for a while... he needs some experienceing coaching in the nhl. it is different dealing with high paid pros who get lazy, not junior circuit guys playing their tails off to get a shot at the pros.

The Head Coach is not the biggest problem for this team. As has been stated before, goaltending should be the top priority of the Avs. Bringing in Roy would certainly help restore some life to the team but unless Roy turns himself into Player/Coach (Reggie Dunlop), there is still a giant void between the pipes. Of course if Roy can't identify a goalie capable of becoming the heir to the crease in Colorado, who can?

Denis Lemieux just won't do in nets and you don't want guys calling radio shows asking Roy when he'll retire...

Another reason to hate the Av's. I have no respect for guys who beat their wives.

I use to be a fan of the Nordiques but just can't seem to like the Av's. Maybe its the terrible color combination in their uniforms, I don't know!

That statement is so incredibly ignorant. Roy never beat his ex-wife. He may have hit a wall in his house and torn a door off of its hinges, but he never beat his ex-wife.

Yes that statement way very ignorant...Sorry I don't like egotistical alleged wife beaters...

The sad thing is I would almost guarantee that wasn't the only incident between him and his wife whether he beat her or not.

Go ahead and say IT AIN'T ABOUT THE MONEY.

May 18, 2009  08:29 PM ET

I grew up watching Roy and the Avs back in the days of old!...When NHL games still got shown on ESPN haha. I think it'd be cool to see Roy behind the bench, it would bring back fond memories.

Hope he trades for Claude Lemieux. Then "The Turtle" can get his -ss kicked once again in an AVs uniform. Roy & Lemieux are disgraces to a good franchise. Stay in Junior and preferably in Quebec.
