Benched Giguere wants to remain a Duck

While most of the Ducks enter the offseason with at least some sense of satisfaction after the club's impressive run that ended in Game 7 of a second-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the defending champion Detroit Red Wings, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere is in a different state. As players went through season-end meetings with Coach Randy Carlyle and General Manager Bob Murray on Saturday, Giguere discussed his uncertain future after having been unseated as the team's starter in early March by Jonas Hiller, who went on to star in the playoffs. "Right now, I just kind of want to step away and go as far as possible from the game of hockey, just think about something else," Giguere said. "Maybe focus on spending quality time with my family, and re-energize and re-focus for next year." Giguere has two years, $13 million and a full no-trade clause remaining on a contract he received after backstopping the Ducks to the 2007 Stanley Cup championship.

6.5 million for a back-up goalie? Not bad.

Certainly more realistic than Luongo and a lot cheaper.

yo why did he get benched anyway? did he play poorly or something? If flyers do get him, whats the point? Maybe he'll just play poorly again and the ppl will say, ok flyers are still looking for the number 1 goalie.

Giggy's a very good (sometimes great) goalie when his focus is there. Trade bait, indeed. But who's gonna bite?

I would say a team with cap room that needs some serious goaltending help. But all of those teams are horrible. So with a no trade clause. He will likely stay where he is.

IMHO, the Flyboys are a realistic choice to make a play for Giggy. He wouldn't be as expensive as Luongo and he's a legitimate #1.

Giguere was never great, or even good--at his best he was but a mediocre tender in a very big fat suit, and exhibit 1A why there's been such emphasis on reducing the size of goaltending equipment since the lockout. He was the prime beneficiary of the clutch and grab NHL in 2003 and of a good and dirty Ducks' D in 2007, and parlayed that it into a big payday for himself. It's telling that Hiller was nothing too special, and yet the Ducks still chose to go with him this year over the former Conn Smyth/Cup Winner. Anyone that pays him more than decent backup money after this contract is just stupid.

I am just wondering how it is once again the freakin Ducks have 2 solid guys between the pipes, meanwhile across town we haven't had one guy be able to step up for us since Kelly Hrudey.

They probably are already as well as about goalies from each and every other NHL team.

I agree fully with "A Minor Character". Giguere was never good, he just happened to wear so much equipment it was next to impossible to get a shot around him. This past off-season, they shrank the legal size of goalie's equipment again, and Giguere suffered. Which should not have been a surprise to anyone, but seems to have been to a few people. He is awful because he doesn't have the girth to fill the whole net anymore. This isn't the '60s, where you'd just put the fattest kid in net because he filled it - you can't get away with that anymore, the goalies of today need to be great athletes nowadays. Giguere will never be good again, in my opinion, and I'd be shocked if anybody bothered trying to pick him up at his current rate of pay. If the Ducks can dump him off and get any kind of quality in return, they will be laughing harder than a nurse's nipples in November

The Ducks have an excellent organization when it comes to scouting, teaching, and coaching NHL goaltenders and it shows. JC Giguere was the pivotal player their Cup win and he's always been the bane of the Wild. I've seen some of his best games against the Wild and he can be absolutely phenomenal.

Hope he picks the Mayo Clinic... he can come to Minnesota anyday and hopefully choose to remain.

She turned me into a newt! I got better.

I'm sorry but you guys but big pads is not the issue. Giguere won a cup the year after goalie equipment got even further reduced in size so don't knock him for the equipment size. SI wrote a great article on Butterfly goalies and how they are breaking down earlier than ever before because it is a style they have been doing since they were just learning to play. I would say body breaking down and mental is his problem. He was actually good the first half of the season right up until his father passed away. After that he never recovered. He is still a good goalie but he is not in the top tier right now like he was post lockout. As for the Ducks being Dirty...lame. Again SI wrote another article how everyone plays dirty this time of year. The Ducks push it but they also pay for it with penalties so don't act like they are getting away with anything. If people could score against their goalies when they have a power play Anaheim would back off. Watch and see when the Olympics come around how many of these "goons" are playing for their country.

lol, why would we want giggy over harding and backstrom? if the wild signed everyone who has been steller against us in the playoffs we'd have a roster of 100 guys...

Giggy's still good. His last 4 years he's been up and down. Judging from the pattern he should be good this upcoming season. The guy does happen to have a Conn Smythe and a Cup ring. The ring post-lock-out. IF the Ducks trade him, they'll regret it.Giggy to Edmonton? Makes sense.

yeah jonas hillar is good now but waite a while he will have a sophomore slump
