Flyer-Canadiens deal in works?

07:28 AM ET 05.18 | The latest trade rumors involving the Flyers have either Danny Briere or Joffrey Lupul and a top prospect (either James Van Riemsdyk, Luca Sbisa or a 2009 first-round pick) headed to Montreal for goaltender Carey Price and the rights to defenseman Mike Komisarek, who will be unresitricted on July 1. If Briere is included, he would need to lift his no-trade clause to make it happen. Price has a cap hit of $2.2 million. Komisarek could command about $5 million.

So much for the Price experiment. I find it ironic that the Flyers would trade for Price after it was they who exposed him in last year's playoffs. So will Gainey trade for Cristobal Huet? (LOL) This is pretty far-fetched.

Price???? Are you kidding me? He was playing for the Flyers in last years playoffs wasn't he? He is the biggest reason Philly ousted the habs in 5 that year. And what has Price done since then to prove he's any better? They would be better off to re-sign Biron or even pick up Emery instead of "rolling the dice" with Price. And Komisarek? I have no interest whatsoever of him becoming a Flyer; he can't do anything 30%+ of the defensemen in the league already can. The only believable thing about this T&R is that Philly would like to get rid of Briere and his contract. Lupul can be moved, but not top prospects Sbisa or Van Riemsdyk - they are great young players who won't have expensive contracts and Philly is in salary cap hell. Don't like this post at all!

HA!!

"He is the biggest reason Philly ousted the habs in 5 that year." Well that and the fact that the Habs weren't and still aren't a very good team by any means. I could actually see this trade happening since Briere is making so much cash. Montreal would be the huge winner in this trade too. Its a good way for the Flyers to get rid of a high priced player and gain a decent goalie.

It makes sense in alot of ways.

Flyers need to get rid of a big contract and Briere certainly has that.
Canadiens have plenty of cap space.
Flyers need a young goalie and Price might be finished mentally in Montreal and need a new team already.
Canadiens need to completely overhaul their team and are always interested in bringing in French Canadien stars.
I would think the young prospect the Canadiens would ask for would be Claude Giroux but might have to sweeten the package going to the Flyers a little.

The Flyers main problem over the years has been they've never had that young goalie to hang their future on. Price could fit that bill....He is only 21....Marc Andre Fleury sucked in his first couple years in Pittsburgh, but they now developed a defensive system and more game then not he looks like a very good goalie...

Biron is pretty much done here....The Flyers have to find defenseman steady enough to put in front of a goalie....Alberts, Jones, and sometimes Carle aren't the guys to stick out there....They need, in my opinion, one puck mover and one porch clearing guy in front of the net....

I'd do a deal like this as long as Van Riemsdyk and Sbisa were not included in the deal....

I have a gut feeling that if Montreal acquires Briere, Kovalev is done there....

this is just plain silly. Why would the Flyers trade for a 2nd string goalie

Bingo. The Rumors part of T&R is in full force today. And why would the Habs take on Briere's ridiculous contract and trade Price and the rights to Komasarik for a has been and a prospect?

May 18, 2009  10:42 AM ET

The Canadiens are going to lose Komisarik in the offseason anyway....They might as well get something of some sorta value for him in return....

True, Komisarek is a UFA, but they can probably work out a better deal that the one mentioned above.

Furthermore, if the Habs have the Cap space to take on Briere's ridiculous contract, why not just sign Komisarek?

Not gonna happen either. First off, I think Gainey's job hinges on him turning Price around this off season, so giving up on a kid you drafted 5th overall 3 years ago - and anointed starter mid-way through last season - would be a major mistake and would certainly seal his fate in terms of losing his job. Secondly, I don't see how MOntreal would have to give up so much to acquire a contract that is openly no longer wanted on the books in Philly. Komisarek leaving is not for sure, but he is a stellar defensive defenseman - the East's Robyn Regehr - and Price, as much as he struggled this year, is still a phenomenal prospect yuo wouldn't give up on at 21. Briere, while french speaking, is old, overpaid, and all of a sudden fairly injury prone. Why would the Habs even want that, let alone give away two of their most valuable assets? Save it. And on top of that, I think the Habs have figured out that they need more team toughness - so picking up injury prone Briere or giant sissy Lupul wouldn't really fit into those plans either.

YO wtf is going on?? geez man.. first this and now luongo

May 18, 2009  11:32 AM ET

Philly is in a tough spot cap wise next year? I don't see how they swing this too, but this makes more sense than the previous Canucks rumor. At least they get a Dman and a goalie.

May 18, 2009  11:52 AM ET

Holmgren seems to have a way to swing deals for players that are UFA's and get a deal done before they hit the market....He has to improve this team's defense and goaltending situations....At the same time creating enough cap space....Briere is the likely candidate....$7 million is a large chunk of change to open up....

The Flyer's minor league system is very young and they don't have the players to bring up and throw into the NHL right now...

Precisely, but who the hell wants that contract?

May 18, 2009  12:35 PM ET

Price couldn't take the pressure in Montreal, and Flyers fans are tougher on their players than Habs fans.

That is certainly a debatable point.

May 18, 2009  01:25 PM ET

Briere is a candidate....now if there was someone crazy enough to take his salary on....that's a different story....Timonen and Briere's contract handcuff this team for the next couple of years....but that was Holmgren trying to make an impact for this team....now those contracts are having an impact (negatively) on the way he has to create this team year after year....
