Rockets want Artest next season

Ron Artest made his free-agent hopes clear in ways subtle and obvious. He spoke about next season, about growing with the Rockets' young players and going farther in his second season with the Rockets than in his first. Asked if he wants to be back with the Rockets, he said, "Yes, God willing. It's not up to me." The answer is "yes" If that still did not spell out how he hopes things will go, he was asked if his preference is to return if things work out in contract negotiations. "Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes," Artest said. "That is yes. I just know this team was so good, I think we'll grow together." The Rockets have been just as clear about their hopes. "He has a desire to come back," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. "We have a desire to make it work. That's step one with a lot of steps from here."

They should bring him back but he will be very expensive. He is now a free agent and he can command the market now. I won't be surprise if other top teams will be vying for him. Lakers, Cavs, Mavs, Suns, Blazers, Magic, etc. Name it and they all want him. Houston has the best chance but they need to put some bucks in there to make him stay.

He will be a great fit in Detroit if both parties can let bygones be bygones...

I don't know how much cap room the Rockets will have to sign Artest, but they should make room. It is truly sad that the two guys who command most of the cap money--Yao and McGrady-- played no part in the end of this Lakers series. Yao (since I know Les won't do what he should and trade him) will be back, but the Rockets will need some money or some luck in the draft to get a backup center to replace Mutombo. As for T-Mac, the Rockets are stuck one way or another with another year of paying out $20+ mil for this loser. Imagine how good the Rockets would have been in this Lakers series if they had their own superstar to counteract Kobe.

At least the Lakers were exposed as a team on the way down. I don't see them winning it all this year.

No surprise here.

Their payroll will be 60$ mil next year, so I am not sure if they can sign him or not. Then again, before taking him on that's about where they stood this season - and they managed to sign him.

Can anyone clarify?

thye should definelty sign him...

He has proven that he is sane AND that he is a major asset
He has EARNED his big payday.....

May 18, 2009  09:03 AM ET

He is a great asset and still a star. He gives that team toughness

May 18, 2009  09:20 AM ET

it seemed to work in Houston... try to keep him.

May 18, 2009  09:30 AM ET

Yup..straiht jacket and all...you can have him.

May 18, 2009  09:35 AM ET

The lakers dont need artest..he can play nice with Quiet stars like yao and battier..but he cant exist next to guys like kobe, wade and Lebron..his personality doesnt allow it, someone other than him to be the "Alpha Male"

toughness?! like what he showed in Game 7?! that was tough, a tough loss..

wow- I totally disagree with basically everything you just said
he hepled carry a DEPLETED houston team to a game 7 with
the Lakers >>>> is your memory that short ??

You don't think he would make the Lakers tougher ?
Alpha male ? he played with TMAC AND YAO and made the cream
puff rockets a TOUGH team...

Agreed.

I think the Lakers should let Odom and Ariza walk and sign Artest; unless of course Ariza is willing to play for less money than some other team will probably offer him. If they do that, I don't see anyone stopping them next year. Seeing as how he and Kobe have a mutual respect for each other off the court, I think it will work just fine.

I couldn't agree more man. I just wonder if it will be in Houston or not. I think Artest was one of the best if not THE best RISK player deal made this past season. While the majority of the people were saying to stay FAR away from Artest and some even saying he had little to NO skill, he came out and silenced the critics. If it wasn't for Artest we wouldn't have seen Houston even play close with the Lakers. With the fire that he has I would love to see him in Dallas. We would have some grit to the team. We need a low post player a LOT worse though. I can't see us ever winning it all with Damp at the post. Just can't see it.

Again.. couldn't have said it better.

Don't forget that Kobe was petitioning to get Artest last summer. Lots of Lakers fans wanted him last year because Artest gives them that toughness that the Lakers lack last year.

Lets also remember that the lakers are STILL not a 'tough' team
they playe GREAT and TOUGH game seven....but I am not ready
to call them tough just yet....lets see how they play vs a
tough/questionably dirty denver team.......

Good showing by the Rockets. Houston has no reason to lower their heads. Next year this time they will be back stronger, more experiecned, and a greater bond amongst teammates.

Keep it strong Rockets, Mavs, and Spurs.

P.S. First time in five years that you wont see a Texas team in the Western Conference Final.
Not bad

Ron Artest will stay with the Rockets. He's not gonna be payed big time, as long as the contract seems fair, he will do anything to return to the rockets. He found a place for his career and i think hes tired of getting traded.
