Will NHL shorten playoffs?

There definitely is some sentiment in hockey circles to try to end the playoffs a little earlier -- hard to believe many people would be interested in skipping a Fourth of July picnic just to take in Game 4 of the Cup final between Anaheim and Buffalo a few years down the road, isn't it? -- but the people backing that idea either don't have enough support or a satisfactory plan to make it a reality. Perhaps things will change if heat and humidity turn the Cup final into a swim meet some year.

i think playoff length is fine, if anything they should shorten the regular season... most pro sports have too many games.... I think 50 would be good, but it would never happen they would lose money...

but then again, with fewer games they will be more crowded and you could probably charge a little more because of the hgiher demand... its like baseball tickets most teams you can get decent seats for like 25-40 bucks football with its 16 games can get close to for 100.

Look at what's happening this series, like 3-4 days inbetween a few games.

Shorten season
increase scoring
teams moving

The only way the playoffs ever be shortened is if the regular season was lengthened, therefore defeating the goal of having it end before mid-June.

Cut the regular season back to 52 games - playing for the Stanley Cup in June is somewhat ridiculous, as is playing the World Series on Halloween. But in today's sports culture this is a pipe dream and I only hope the NFL doesn't go to 18 games.

Perfect logic - take the best part of the season and reduce it.
Stupid...

Agreed. Why on earth would you shorten the length of the playoffs? Shorten the length of the regular season, IF anything.

The outside temperature has minimal affect on the ice inside an arena. Most cases where the ice melts is do to the cooling system under the ice, not because the temperature outside is in the 90s.

They need to shorten the length between games and the length between series. They used to play back to back home games. I don't see why they cant today?

AMEN, AMEN! They need to do that in all sports.

I'm not sure about back to back games, but if teams go to a game seven just give them one day off (or none), if that's too much then don't go to a game seven, take care of business in less games.

I dont think they were being literal when they wrote that last line. I think the writer was trying to use a very poor play on words.

Here's an idea; shorten the season to 76 games and add a best of 5 game qualifier and let 4 more teams into the play-offs, give the top 6 teams in each conference a bye for the first round and schedule play-offs with only day of rest and start a series with no more than 3 days off where possible. Also schedule the regular season shorter by 2-3 weeks so that the Stanley Cup finals aren't being held in June.

I agree. I thought it was funny that everybody was making a big deal that the Blackhawks had "more" rest. Chicago went to six games, one less than the Wings, and then the Wings got three days off from their last game.

My mom asked the other day about whether the Stanley Cup used to end sooner, and did they extend the playoffs recently. Nope, just the time off. I hadn't really thought much of it before, but players in interviews have been saying "well you play these guys for two weeks..."--it just seems odd that a series takes two weeks, but the further a series goes along it makes sense.

I think it's brilliant too.

Ah, the Toronto Sun Jr. paper is at it again. Why would anyone think that the playoffs would be shortened? Is it possible that there were no death threats to publish today so they had to resort to other methods of "creative reporting" wherein they had someone with an NHL shirt/jersey/hat/keychain tell them that they were thinking of shortening the season.
Tips to help avoid rediculous articles:
1) Does the source look impaired (probably not a reliable source of information)
2) Did the source offer you narcotics of any variety before giving you that "information"
3) Is that source Pierre McGuire or Mike Milbury? (Just a tip, nobody listens to them.)
4) If you are hearing voices you should probably take your medication before reporting what they tell you or wait until the medication kicks in before printing what they said. Not everyone can be Scott from Quiznos and have an inanimate object give them great directions on the job.
5) Have someone on staff from the Toronto Sun and if that person says that they want to run the article, don't run that in your paper.

I've rolled around similar ideas in my head as well.

But four more teams in the playoffs? Why play a regular season?

I've thought of having he 8th and 9th teams have a one game playoff for the final playoff spot (maybe a best of 3 to give each time at least one extra home date) and have them "beat each other up" a little more, giving the #1 seed a little help. Of course that only lengthens the process.

Cut it do 5 teams in each Conference, the 4th and 5th teams having the best of 3 (in 4 days), giving the top teams a few extra days of rest.

I really don't know the answer without eliminating rounds/games, which lowers revenues with neither the NHLPA or BOG would agree to.

the article wasn't about cutting the number of games, it was about getting rid of the number of days BETWEEN games. It would be nice to see games every other night instead of two days off between games.
