How Mavs might get Shaq

06:22 AM ET 05.19 | The Mavs might be able to get the best big man of this generation by sending Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse to the Suns. That deal, assuming Phoenix would buy out Stack, would represent eight-figure savings to Suns owner Robert Sarver. That could free up money to sign Amare Stoudemire to a long-term extension, instead of trading their franchise player and beginning a rebuilding project.

the suns are gonna lose amare if they agree to this sure amare gets the money, what about teamates?! phoenix isnt exactly an NBA players dream city..but knowing amare he just might take the money never mind the losing

all i'm gonna say is...................Shaq makes an improvement over Erica.

May 19, 2009  07:34 AM ET

This doesn't help Phoenix. The will already have money to extend Amare after Shaq expires next summer. If they are still paying Dampier $13 million in 2011, they have less money for top free agents. And why trade Shaq unless you're getting good, young talent in return.

One washed up superstar, combined with a soft team, and a crazy owner. That'll work out!!

May 19, 2009  07:48 AM ET

Sarver can call it whatever he likes. It's a sellout. This makes no sense at all. They are going to trade "the best big man of his generation" for the worse. Signing Stoudemire must be a priority, but Stoudemire can't carry the Suns. What good would it do to sign him, and then have the team drop off the face of the earth. This has to be the absolute worst proposal I've heard lately.

18 & 9, 30 minutes per game? He hasn't done that since Miami won the 'ship.... washed up you say? Better than 27 other teams starting centers... including Ilgauskis, where he'll most likely play and win #5.

Because he's lost his freakin' mind.

If it does happen, that's the reason it could be interesting.

Stack will get bought out and re-sign with Dallas again?

May 19, 2009  08:03 AM ET

Don't know that this makes Dallas more "Athletic"... but it is an improvement over Erika's bag of nothing.

May 19, 2009  08:10 AM ET

I think Shaq doesnt help a team more than slows them down Phoenix should have not traded for him in the first place. I think that Shaq should retire and save people some money.

May 19, 2009  08:11 AM ET

This will be awesome deal for the Mavs. Just getting rid of Ericka is already a very good deal. I don't know if the Mavs is the best deal for the Suns. They probably can get Shaq for somebody better from other teams. Salary-wise, I don't know what team has $20 million to trade w/. If the Suns are getting rid of Shaq just for getting rid of him then the Mavs is the best option. The Suns would probably want JHo w/ Dampier but I think the Suns just want to free up some cash to sign Amare to a long term deal. That's why Stack's $8-9 million is very helpful for the Suns.

There are 30 teams in the league. Start naming the ones that are puting up better numbers...I'll wait.

There wasn't one center in the league that proved he's better than Shaq head-2-head.

No, I think Stack is officially done in Dallas.

I would love to see this happen but I don't think it will. To get Shaq we will have to give more than Damp and an expiring contract in Stack.

I think there are factors that many are not seeing behind the scenes. Sha

Exactly. Haters hate. That's what they do. It doesn't have to make sense. He may not be what he once was, but until some of the youngsters start outplaying him, the haters can keep tasting his ass.

May 19, 2009  08:32 AM ET

Darn it... hit enter on accident. Anyway, I think there are factors that many are not seeing behind the scenes. Shaq has shown an interest in coming to Dallas for a good while. As much as many people say that Cuban is a horrible owner it's been shown that many players like the thought of having him as an owner.

So, we don't know if Shaq has had talks basically saying that if they want to get anything for him then they had better do so now and expressed interest in Dallas. I would rather try for a young center like Bosh if Cuban is going to throw money out there and go over the budget and pay penalties but Shaq isn't done yet.

May 19, 2009  08:33 AM ET

Yeah that will work out with Cuban and Shaq. There are not enough microphones in the Dallas metroplex area for Cuban, Shaq and Jerry Jones.

that might be true- but why in the world would the Suns want to
TAKE ON extra contract (years)....it makes no sense-
Amare's contrac tis up when Shaq's ends- there is no need to
purge shaqs salary if the reason is to re-sign Amare-
