Will Celtics lose 'Big Baby'?

While Eddie House is likely to return to the Celtics, time will tell whether Glen Davis, Stephon Marbury, Gabe Pruitt, Leon Powe, and Mikki Moore will be back. Following yesterday's season-ending team meeting, several of the players talked about their free agency situation, though Ainge was in no rush. "We'll just take our time," Ainge said. "We have a while before we talk about that stuff . . . But no decisions are needed at this point with any of them." Davis is expected to be a coveted restricted free agent after filling in for Kevin Garnett late in the regular season and during the playoffs. "Big Baby" averaged 7 points and 4 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game in the regular season and 15.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in the postseason. One NBA general manager said in early May that Davis probably would merit $3 million-$5 million in his next contract.

I liked Leon Powe better....i doubt all of the big three will play out their contracts in Boston because of their massive contracts, of course Paul Pierce will retire there.......

Too many 'if's faced boston this year....if only KG was Healthy.

They shouldn't have any trouble keeping Powe because his injury ruined any chance of him getting a big contract. He already suffered major injuries before he was a Celtic. Big Baby made a name for himself, but there is competition among free agent power forwards. There is Boozer, Odom, Lee, Andersen. There are veterans like Gooden, Wilcox, and Swift and old veterans like McDyess and Smith. There are young sleepers like Bass, Millsap, Pops, and Diogu. The Celtics need more length and athleticism coming off the bench. The never filled the roles of PJ Brown and Posey.

Marbury doesn't fit well because he and Rondo have the same strength (penetration) and the same weakness (3-pt shooting). So when you play them together, their weakness is highlighted while the strength is diminished by having one less shotter on the floor. That leaves Marbury with 10-15 minutes of action when Rondo is not in the game. They are better off with a combo guard with size that they can rotate in.

Big Baby should be brought back--PERIOD The rest are all easily replaceable. Especially when you consider their contribution.

Man, good post, you brought everybody into the mix. Bass and Milsapp are good young players that play big Baby's position. Big Baby will be coveted out there but so will BAss and Milsapp. Milsapp could be out of the running because of the Boozer effect. If Landry was a free agent then his name would have been in there also.

I neglected to mention Villanueva, who has a dimension to his game that most of the others don't.

hard to tell if those numbers are the norm or not. one good playoff series can get you a big contract right Jerome James.

nice point-
but davis is much younger than JJ...and he clearly is at least
a functional player.....

"One NBA general manager said in early May that Davis probably would merit $3 million-$5 million in his next contract"
he's going to be offered more than that- IMO
question is what is bostons value & do they match

I'm sure the fat has swelled up around his ears so much that he cannot hear you.

Big Baby will be back with the Celtics. In the long run 3 to 5 million a year is an appropriate contract for his services.

The hard truth with Boston is that they have to trade Garnet. Yes - its not the popular choice but they have to....maybe for Blake Griffin or a young stud. The big three is aging and in two years they will be the new Barkley, Pippen and Clyde... that just won't cut it. Garnet will be 34 next season so it will be a prudent to trade him while he still has some value. As for Big Baby... I fear his weight issues will resurface once he gets a guaranteed long contract....

i find it hard for Boston to trade KG for Griffin... to get Griffen they would have to also pick up other players in the trade with big contracts to match KG's monster contract. Boston doesn't want to rebuild either because yes the 3 are aging but they are in their prime leading toward their downward slope but either way they will be a strong team for at least 3 more years so thats no reason to rebuild.

of the 3 Ray Ray is due to come off the books by 2010, leaving a window for that free agency class that everyone is talking about. Boston has a lot of money coming off the books by then so the would think "NO" trading KG is not the right move, he is the core of that team.

May 19, 2009  09:44 AM ET

Boston is going to have to match whatever offer Baby gets (if the cap allows it). Baby has truly emerged this year and i doubt that he will return to the 08-09 season stats. And Doc needs him to shave minutes off of KG, you have to extend his career as much as possible now.

no one is taking a post-surgical KG with that huge contract
Let me rephrase that- the celts will not be able to move his
MASSIVE contract and get anything of value back

May 19, 2009  10:10 AM ET

Glen Davis:$0.7 mill for 7 pts a game plus several postseason clutch plays=RESIGN 3-4 million a year
Leon Powe:$0.8 mill for 8 pts a game= as long as he doesnt want absurd money=RESIGN 3 million a year
Mikki Moore:$5.6 mill for 4 pts a game= LMAO!!!!! KICK HIS A55 TO THE CURB!!!!
Stephon Marbury:$20.8 mill for 3 pts a game= WTF NEXT!!!!!
Gabe Pruitt: WHO?????

May 19, 2009  10:20 AM ET

Celts made a HUGE mistake by not signing Posey and somehow replacing PJ Brown. I think those 2 factors came back to haunt them. Ofcourse none of this would be talked if KG was healthy, but you never make such assumptions. Its a physical sport, ppl do get hurt.

U are stone cold wrong. Not only will that never happen, but KG and co have a couple of years to get a few more championships. Young talent will appear slowly while winning champoinships, if injuries don't get them first. This era is not over yet.

I don't think there is any chance those two are back, and Marbury was bought out, so the Celtics did not pay him nearly $21 Million.

Another nice young big man who may be out there is Varejao. More defensive and rebounding then a scorer. I imagine the Cavs will go hard to resign him though, they will be short big men after next year(Z and Wallace contracts expire after next season) and he works the pick and roll very nicely with Lebron.

I like Big Baby but 5 Million is much too high. He lacks length, speed and hops. Look at Mikki, he had one good season and was given too large a contract. This is a common theme - a player has a good season and/or playoffs and they get a huge contract. Should the 10th player (assume KG and Powe are healthy) get that much money. When those guys come back he will be back to 6pts as usual.
