Rodriguez: Wolverines may lose more players

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Kurt Wermers won't return to Wolverines this fall, Rich Rodriguez said. The coach did not provide an explanation, but added that more players could be deleted from the roster. "Stay tuned," he said. "There's a couple guys I'm gonna sit with here. Just guys that maybe if they're not doing all their responsibilities and doing what they need to do to be part of our football program may not be back. I hope that's not too many." Rodriguez also said he plans to talk with senior running back Kevin Grady, who was jailed last week for probation violations related to a drunk driving conviction. The coach said he wouldn't decide on Grady's future with the team until the two had a discussion. Grady carried the ball 14 times for 33 yards last fall.

OK, UofM people, is there a story here or not? Is this RichRod cleaning house of guys he thinks aren't committed to, or aren't likely to contribute to, the direction he wants to take the Wolverines, or are we looking at defections by kids he was counting on to be significant contributors?

"Stay tuned"????? Why should things like this be aired in public? They're kids, not pros. Keep it in-house Rich.

This really is a non-story. So some players couldn't cut it under Rich Rod's system? Who cares? Transfers happen everywhere especially when a coach installs a new system. I can't believe a third or fourth string redshirt freshman leaving made Si.com's national news page. www.michiganfootballblog.blogspot.com.

I agree with my "blue blooded" friend. For the most part these are players RR did not recruit. If they are not committed to what he wants for his team then it is better for both sides if they move on. (Oh my God, did I just say something nice about RR...??).

At least until the next CW "fat" joke right...?

We should vote for TnR's pic of the year. I nominate the above RichRod bowling pic and Kiffin's toothless pic for starters.

May 19, 2009  11:48 AM ET

Just getting EVERYONE on the same page. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Grady. As Warden said in a different thread he has worked his butt off since he hurt his knee; however, he keeps finding ways to put himself in the doghouse. This time he could be totally gone.

It is disturbing that RR has no qualms about throwing any of these kids under the bus publicly. In fact, he makes a joke of it. I have no problem with him expecting more from his players, but I agree with other, keep it in house. Show at least a litlle class, coach.

Why would it be disturbing or surprising? He threw his Alma Mater under the bus.

It's kind of a double edged sword if you think about it.

With all the "publicity" he's received, there would be many questions if additional players would suddenly be leaving even if it was "kept quiet" in a "classy" manner.

In my mind, at least this way he is setting an expectation for future events rather creating a swirl of additional controversy when any departures happen. To an extent, I think this strategy protects his and "the program's" reputation.

I'm not sensing a lot of improvement in UM's record in 2009 as compared to 2008. Starting to look like another sub-.500 season (4-5 wins), which has to be considered ****-ing awful by UM standards. RichRod's not even going to attempt to work with the players he inherited, just wants them to go away so he can build the team in the image he wants. Anyone besides me getting more and more skeptical?

May 19, 2009  12:27 PM ET

I can just imagine how the meeting between RR and Grady will go
RR - The next time you go out drinking without me, you're off the team!
Grady - OK Coach. You got anything going on right now?

I'd like to say that I am more skeptical, JRM, but I didn't get UM's hire of RichRod from the outset.

Psychology 101: When the whole world has to change to fit you, you're most likely the one with the problem.

It's hard not to view Rich Rod in this manner.

Like Kiffin Rodriguez is under tremendous pressure to produce. They both see dead wood which could be used to entice a recruit who could add to the program. If we are going to make such demands for success we should expect many coaches to leave no stone unturned in the effort to meet expectations.
