Dunleavy: Clippers will draft Griffin

06:25 AM ET 05.20 | Danny Manning, Michael Olowokandi . . . and now Blake Griffin. The Clippers have twice had the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, and will get it again for a third time, having won the league's draft lottery Tuesday night at Secaucus, N.J. "Clearly, we're taking Blake Griffin," Clippers General Manager and Coach Mike Dunleavy said in a telephone interview from Barcelona, Spain. "This guy is the No. 1 pick. We're extremely excited. He's the guy." There wasn't much of a question the Clippers would do anything other than take the dynamic, explosive forward from Oklahoma. Dunleavy, though, wasn't about to be coy in the wee morning hours in Spain and erased any shred of doubt about the team's intention in the draft June 25 in New York.

Why is an NBA T&R in MLB?

May 20, 2009  06:55 AM ET

Poor kid his career is over before it even started. Playing for the Clippers is the kiss of death right Baron Davis.l

This leaves Z-Bo as the odd man out to trade.
His contract of 16 mil this upcoming season followed by 17.3 mil the season after that is something the clippers would wish to release.
B Diddy (12.1 mil) and Kaman (11mil) would be the only two big contracts.

Unfortunately, the Clippers have arguably the most unmovable player in the NBA playing power forward. There are teams that can use a 20/10 talent like Zach Randolph, but who would take a chance on his attitude?

not to mention that terrible contract he has left

won't change anything in LA , need to get rid of the owner. Mr Sterling

May 20, 2009  07:49 AM ET

The Clippers have drafted a lot of good players over the years, they usually all leave as soon as they can.

May 20, 2009  07:52 AM ET

What other choice do the Clippers have? Hope Blake Griffin is ready to except losing. It's unfortuate, but considering the Clippers, losing is habit forming. However, on a unrealistic view, Blake Griffin could be the piece needed, provided the team make a trade to get rid of either Camby or "the guy they got from the Knicks."

May 20, 2009  07:55 AM ET

And thus begins Blake's spiral into 5 years of insignificance. Poor guy...

Great point....But I think we all may be missing the obvious. The clippers could still mess this up, and select some no name d - 3 school big man, that had a good pre draft camp. The clippers are not known to be smart, or big spenders

May 20, 2009  08:10 AM ET

Poor kid...the wrong L.A. team will draft him. Fortunately, the Clippers have no money so after he "pays his dues" in L.A., someone will give him plenty of money to go elsewhere. I'm sure his agent wil be looking at the first possible opportunity to get him out of there.

May 20, 2009  08:22 AM ET

The Clippers now have to trade 1 of their bigs (Zach, Camby,Kaman) to make room for Griffin. Kaman would be the best option to trade for if a team needs some low post play. Kaman has the least pay per year and the most upsides.

I feel really bad for Blake unless they trade him to OKC. I was hoping OKC would get him ala Lebron James draft where the hometown gets their boy.

Doesn't Al Davis own the Clippers?

Is it really that much worse going to the Clips as opposed to Memphis or some other team like that? Either way he was going to a bad team that likely has a bad history. Much like football, if you are the consensus #1, you are going to a bad team.

May 20, 2009  08:48 AM ET

He's going to OKC in a trade for pick #3 and Jeff Green...Clips also throw in DeAndre Jordan...

I say fire Dunleavy. Lack of talent has not been the problem for the Clippers. The problem is how to use and motivate the talent. How to recognize the strengths and weaknesses and plug the players in the system. Many players have come and go. They go to other teams and excel. For example, the Lakers, there is lamar Odom and Josh Powell. Powell sat on the bench for two years. And Eddie House in Boston. And many more. The problem is the coaching and general manager. I say fire Dunleavy.

This is basically a three year audition for the Celtics, Lakers or Cavs.

he might as well throw on the pads and play for the cleveland browns, he would have a better chance..........oh yea, uh never mind. LoL

he's been sentenced to the clipjoint which he'll be serving 3-5. the crime: being selected #1 overall

Agree 100%. Griffin is an awesome player, but the Clippers need about 5 of him to be a servicable team. He may as well pick up a bat and go play for the Nationals in the offseason. They got the lottery figured out, too bad they can't figure out "winning".
