New Wild GM Chuck Fletcher must decide if he wants to negotiate with wing Marian Gaborik, scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Gaborik and his agent, Ron Salcer, have said they likely would test free agency, but Salcer said he is willing to sit down with the Wild, the only team that can negotiate with Gaborik before free agency begins.

Um, okay. Groovy.

May 22, 2009  09:18 AM ET

That might put a dent in Toronto and Montreal's plans.

Yes...No McGuire!

Hopefully he's smart enough to let this chump walk. Unless he is willing to sign an incentive laden contract (that the league approves), then he will cost too much money for a guy who only plays 50 games a year. Selfish.

If I'm GM of this team, my plan is;

- Hire a coach that players actually want to play for, like Pat Quinn or Jaques Demers, or John Anderson for instance (just examples, not necessarily who they should hire).
-With the fanbase they have, and a coach who's good to play for, try to attract a couple bigger name free agents - maybe a Marian Hossa, or maybe B level agents, depending on who's out there.
-Once you have deepened the roster and improved the on-ice product from the boring style they play now, there will be that much more of a draw for other free agents, thus helping the growth process.
-Spend oodles on the scouting dep't - the team makes money, if they are focussed on improving, the draft is the best way to do it, long term, so spending the cash on scouts is the way to go, especially in Europe.
-Let Gaborik walk, and get rid of that cancer/change the culture in the dressing room for the better
-Leave Saku Koivu on the vine, who needs another high priced underachieving softy in their lineup?

Rinse, lather, repeat as required.

Chuck Fletcher is a pretty smart guy. He's not going to break the bank for an injury prone malcontent. I look for Gabby's rights to be traded in the near future.

Ha! Thank god he is willing to talk to the Wild. They have drafted him and paid him for last few years. Its a good thing he is such a nice guy to be willing to talk to the Wild.

Egotistical

Pens should trade J. Staal for Gabby.Excrement would eject itself from my ass if that happened.

no, they should not.

IF they trade staal at all, it should be in 2 or 3 seasons, once his hands have caught up with the rest of his game.

Good Advice GoCanada - You seem to know what you are talking about. You would be better then McQuire in this position!

Does this mean i still have to see mcguire on nbc

Marian Gaborik run while you can

May 22, 2009  07:25 PM ET

part of this team's new era should include showing gabby the door unless he wants to play for about 6.5 mil, it's mikko koivu's team now. he is a natural leader, a great play maker, plays tough, and the players love him. gabby is all flash and little substance; he is still relatively young so i don't want to completely write him off, but no way is he worth the huge buck at this point in time...

May 22, 2009  11:18 PM ET

yea, you are only as good as the games you are fit to play in! if Gabby could stay healthy he would be a worthwhile asset.. I think he has been paid way more than he has earned playing hockey, to this point

May 23, 2009  01:30 AM ET

Gabby should play for free next season to make up for lost games.

They need to change the rules when it comes to player injuries. If a player is hurt for 'x' games in the final year of his contract, the team should have the right (if they want) to one more year at the current salary level.

The Wild got hosed here. He definitely was going to be traded but got hurt and elected to have surgery. Fine, than you play one more year at your current salary and then become unrestricted.

You need to protect teams assets. Can't ruin a franchise's competitiveness for a few years because someone got injured and said player refused to sign an extension with said team.

And, I agree with moxxie, he should play a year for free...
