Rubio dissing Memphis & OKC?

From what people around the league are saying, Ricky Rubio's camp may already be sending out feelers indicating that he's not interested in the least bit in playing in Memphis. "Rubio doesn't want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so. Fegan [Rubio's agent] wants him in L.A., and if he can't have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City." Unlike Griffin or Hasheem Thabeet, who don't really have any choice where they will play next season if a team decides to play hardball, Rubio has a reasonably attractive alternative option at his disposal -- returning to Spain. "He'll pull out if he doesn't like what he's hearing," the NBA source tells us. "Or he can stay in and force the Grizzlies to call his bluff -- would they really take him knowing that he may never come over? That's one way to get him to fall to three."

i doubt he would return to Spain? might as well sacrifice the first few years and just get ur NBA career running....European basketball just isn't as enjoyable to watch in my opinion...Don't pull a Steve Francis.

I know it's not likely to happen but I'd love to see the Clippers take Rubio so that Griffin could go to OKC. What a great young nucleus the Thunder would have.

Here's a plan. Don't draft him at all! I get sick and tired of players who haven't proven a dad-gum thing in the N.B.A. acting like their "s#!t" is all that. Ok, you got props in the Olympics playing International style basketball, but if everyone could play in the N.B.A. I'm sure a lot more of the so-called "next best European things" would have had more promising careers during their stay. Of all the European "stars" that come to the N.B.A., how many are actually "stars"? There's a saying that reminds us that "Education is man's going forward from "co*ksure ignorance to thoughtful uncertainty". I think this young man is due for an education on how things are supposed to be and how things are. 80 games over a 6-7 month period wherein you have to bring your "A" game every night against some of the best talent in the world has destroyed greater [young] men than Ricky Rubio.

Be careful what you wish for Ricky... You may get it.

wow a guy that has proven nothing in the nba is already acting like a diva

May 22, 2009  07:55 AM ET

If he is pulling an Eli Manning he already goes to the bottom of the rung in my book... **** the guy. Seriously its an honor not a right to play in the NBA. There are guys that would give up their left you know what to just get drafted... he shouldn't be putting his name out there if he is that stressed about forking out his own cash to buy out of his contract. Look at Chris Paul.. he is TOP 5 talent in the NBA playing on a small team. Deron Williams another great example. This kid can play ball but to give in to his antics would be a travesty in my book...

May 22, 2009  07:57 AM ET

what a ****, Vocal Point has hit the point! He is playing college ball over there! You think the Grizz is a worse team then the Clippers? OK go there if you like perennial loosing, also dont the Clips have a guard in Davis? Hell take the OK forward, dont be the Clips of old!

May 22, 2009  08:02 AM ET

Since you guys are all flipping out.... I have one question...

Can you blame him?

May 22, 2009  08:10 AM ET

You guys realize he has to pay 7,000,000 to get out of his contract? Would you pay 7 mil to play for a team you don't want to play for? Besides, he's only 18 and I don't think he's hurting for money. I'd do the same thing he's doing.

May 22, 2009  08:12 AM ET

If they took Rubio to Platinum Plus....he'd be a big fan of Memphis...

May 22, 2009  08:13 AM ET

If he doen't want to go to a team because he may not like the coach, teammates or playing style that is somewhat exceptable but not because he or should I say his agent wants him in a bigger market. If a player is exceptional and lives up to the hype it doesn't matter about marketing, look at Lebron he has huge marketing deals and plays in freakin Cleveland. I repeat Cleveland

May 22, 2009  08:13 AM ET

Be careful Rubio, its a whole different game when every player on the floor is as athletic as you are (or more so) and the system is not built around you...

May 22, 2009  08:14 AM ET

No, I can't blame him. When all of us came out of high school or college and had to find our first paying job, were we drafted and told we were being sent to a city or town that we had absolutely zero interest in (unless we were signing up for the military)? HELL NO. So don't be calling these soon to be professional athletes divas for doing the exact same thing we would be doing in that situation. Granted, these guys will be making considerably more money than we will ever hope to make, but that's irrelevant. You want to be happy where you live and work. These guys are no different.

Try putting yourself in someone else's shoes before you go off on them!!!!

The answer is yes. The guys is not playing by the rule. He should be no exception. If the NBA allows that then every player in the draft should have the same right as this "Diva". If he gets drafted by Memphis or OKC and he declines then he should be ban from the NBA. It's not fair for the college kids that worked on following the rules the right way and then allowing somebody from outside the USA to just turn down something that kids always dream of.

He's on the Spanish national team. He's already seen how poorly handled his teammate Pau Gasol was in Memphis before LA made the steal of the century. Why on Earth would anyone want to play for a team that cares more about its bottom dollar than actually competing to win?

True but Ricky is no Lebron! Plus Lebron stayed home which helped the hype. Would you pay out of your own pocket to play on a bad team that isn't going anywhere anytime soon?

If your a great player endorsement deals will come where ever your are. Plus a nucleus of Rubio,Gay, Mayo and Gasol could get on the fast track in the West just like Portland did this year.

Other than for trading purposes, why would a team waste a pick on someone whose already said he ain't comin if you select him?

Absolutely untrue... I work for a national bank. If they tell me to go to another city, I either do so or I don't have a job. Businesses in almost any field can tell there employees where they will be located. If he doesn't like Memphis, I'm sure there's a McDonalds in LA that will bring him on board.
