Staal: My brother cheats on faceoffs

Carolina center Eric Staal had a pretty simple explanation for why his younger brother, Jordan Staal, was thrown out of the faceoff circle several times when they squared off in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final Monday. "He's cheating, that's why," Staal said. "[The linesman] has got no choice. [Jordan] has got his stick in the air and he's turning his body. "The linesmen know how important faceoffs are in the playoffs, and they're going to call it the right way. They did a good job of that in Game 1." After the Penguins' game-day skate yesterday, Jordan Staal offered an interesting -- though not necessarily serious -- explanation for that, once his question of "Is he calling me a cheater?" had been answered in the affirmative. "What usually happens is ... well, [the linesmen] pick sides and kind of lean toward the older brother on faceoffs and kick me out," he said, smiling. "He cheats, too."

Pittsburg? Cheating? what a surpri........ na, no surprise there. i'm sure bettman will phone the linesmen and tell them to let the pens slide on face offs......

Brotherly Love!

Wow jmsfly....sounds like you are a bitter Flyers fan that is upset that his team actually gets called on all of the dirty crap they pull off. I'm sure you haven't even watched the series so far, but even Canes fans have admitted that the officiating has been right down the middle. So go cuddle with your autographed photo of Scott Hartnell and I'll see you in October

May 22, 2009  08:43 AM ET

This is nothing more than just some brotherly taunting back and forth.

Hey Eric, have you noticed your brother shutting you down too?

May 22, 2009  08:54 AM ET

Staal, E. should be on the back of a milk carton...he has gotten completely shut down. And let's not forget, if he would have buried that puck in the wide open net at the end of Game 1, this could be a completely different series.

And it still could be. I am not counting the Canes out yet. I do predict a Pens' win in this series, but we don't have a good track recod in their territory, and we need to take one from them at home. Well, we don't need to, but I think it would be best.

But again, J. Staal's line has been effective against E. Staal's line, and I hope that continues.

I gotta say that third goal from Malkin was a work of art.

Oh believe me, I know. I desperately want to win a game down there. Hopefully Bill Cowher can continue his tradition of losing playoff games at home and deliver us the victory. Have you seen the Youtube of him cranking the siren down there? It is almost creepy how much fun he is having

Nope. I have yet to see it, but heard about it. The Bill Cowher thing doesn't really concern me. I mean, (as stated time and time again in a TD yesterday), I have personally moved on, and look forward to finishing the Canes off (hopefully). Pittsburgh fans will enjoy that even more. :)

Simply amazing.

Ah the Toronto Sun Jr. stirring the pot again. Telling us what we already know. The funny part is that I don't remember seeing Stall getting thrown out of the circle in the first series. Then in the second series I saw him get tossed a couple of times and I haven't been able to watch any of this series.

May 22, 2009  09:16 AM ET

Big freakin deal. If anything, it is probably a matter of nerves going up against his brother - nothing to do with cheating.

Sounds like the boys need to be put in time out!

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa......are you telling me that Jordan and Eric Staal are brothers??? Yeah ok...I'll believe that when I actually hear it from the Versus broadcasters themselves....

Smart arse.

Can somebody call the Waaaaaaaaaambulance? Eric Staal needs a ride back to Carolina.

May 22, 2009  09:53 AM ET

wow shafnutz05.. sounds like someone likes to hide behind their consecutive top three draft picks.. i would too if i was gifted malkin and crosby, courtesy of mr. bettman. it's painfully obvious crosby gets all sorts of bogus calls and the integrity of the game suffers because of it. even casual fans can see he gets all the calls, and really why would they keep watching if gary's gonna allow it to continue? we will see you in october after detroit takes you to school again.

May 22, 2009  10:03 AM ET

LOL windmill...I have never seen such a sore loser. By that logic, we should have Ovechkin because Bettman owed us the #1 pick that year too. And seriously...at least a lot of Caps fans had the dignity to stop whining about Crosby after the series ended. I think it's ironic that your fanbase continously makes fun of Crosby for whining, yet it is the Flyers faithful that does most of it.

The argument that the NHL hands Crosby penalty calls is absolutely ridiculous. When you are good enough to slice through a defense or keep the pick in the offensive zone, the defensive team is going to make mistakes. Nobody is giving him anything...it's hard work. I am sorry that the Flyers' $52 million man Daniel Briere virtually disappeared for you during the Pens series, but I am happy that our stars produce when it's crunch time.

Again, I'm sure you haven't watched five minutes of the Canes series, but last night Crosby got blatantly tripped in front of the net and somehow ended up with the 2 minute minor. You bet we will see you in October...the favorite rallying cry of a Flyers fan that has been dismissed from the playoffs early once again

May 22, 2009  10:05 AM ET

puck*.....man typos galore today

May 22, 2009  10:09 AM ET

it's easy to say crosby doesnt get all the calls when youre wearing the rainbow colored sunglasses they pass out in pittsburg. of course youre not going to think he's whining or diving. give me a break dude. i have watched the pens/canes series and the only penguin worth watching is malkin, who is a monster. crosby should take a lesson - pretend you dont speak english, shut up, and play.

May 22, 2009  10:10 AM ET

and if crosby dont shave that fake mustach. geeze. looking like a 14 year old mexican. id rather shave that crap off and keep my dignity then look like a moron. hey crosby! hurry up and hit puberty so i dont have to look at your ugly bum fluff face.
