Roenick: Wings coach doesn't like Chelios

Chicago native Chris Chelios has yet to appear for the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference finals against the Blackhawks and former teammate Jeremy Roenick believes there's an underlying reason. "The coach [ Mike Babcock] just doesn't like him for some ungodly known reason," Roenick said Thursday on "The Monsters in the Morning" on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. "I think he's got a grudge against American players, but he does not like Cheli at all. "I don't know if it's a hatred because hate is a strong word, but there is some underlying issue there that I don't understand. You know Babcock is the coach. You have to respect him for his decisions on who he plays. Sometimes it's just the verbal stuff that goes back and forth from what I understand. Cheli will never complain. He is the ultimate professional. He will do whatever the team needs."

lol....Roenick giving yet another unsubstantiated "inside story". Where exactly does he have proof that Babcock has a secret grudge against Chelios? I think that Jeremy just can't bear to be away from the spotlight

It sounds like Roenick is trying to plant friction and a media frenzy into the Red Wings' locker room to benefit the Blackhawks.

If you read the Red Wings' rebuttles posted in the Detroit Free Press, Roenick comes out of this looking like an uneducated buffoon. The best quote comes from Michigan native Brian Rafalski who is very pleased that Babcock has paired him with multi-Norris Trophy winner Nick Lidstrom.

Which isn't hard to accomplish.

Jeremy Roenick hasn't been a story since I scored six goals in a game with him on NHL 94

lmao..... as rp-29 stated.... read the whole article.... its filled with the red wings basically rolling their eyes..... even cheli..... i hope he plays in chitown

Chelios is at the end of his storied career. The man looks to be skating in slush. He cannot keep up with the fast pace of the playoffs. He is a great teacher which is the role he now plays. Babcocks job is to put the most competitive team on the ice and he is doing that. Maybe if the wings go up 3-0 in this playoff babcock will let him play his former team for the last time

May 22, 2009  09:26 AM ET

Chelios IS supposed to play tonight, first off.

Secondly, you gotta love Roenick trying to make it a "racist" thing, stating that Bacock hates American players, while Babcock plays Rafalski steady and has Abdelkader in the game on the regular.

The only thing Babcock has against Chelios are his old legs. He doesn't have the speed to keep up with the faster teams in the league, and he gets victimized by those teams' fast forwards, which either results in great scoring chances (or goals) or Chelios taking a penalty. Plus, this rookie Ericsson has proven that he is ready now to be a top 4 defenceman on any team in the league, further pushing Chelios down the depth chart. this isn't a mass conspiracy to keep Chelios from playing, he's simply just not fast enough to keep up with the play right now. He's still likely the league's most effective minimum wage player, but his time with the Wings may have passed if he expects to be an everyday player.

Roenick talks just to hear his own voice and see his name in print. There was a time when what he said was relevant, but that time has passed, and ain't coming back.

Dude, he was awesome! But he talked less in that game.

Hating Americans is funny. Is he trying to make everyone get behind the Hawks by making Babcock unpatriotic? Maybe it's that Cheli is 46 and maybe, maybe, has lost a step (that was evident in the Stars series last year).

I loved both of their reactions. Babcock: "Two of my kids are American, so that kind of takes out the American thing." Cheli: "I don't know what J.R. is talking about....I'll call J.R. and ask him what he said, but he probably won't even remember.''

likes it up the ****?

And the Blackhawks really aren't too slow footed. Cheli made some time against the Ducks, but he'd be a detriment in this series.

guys like roenick and chelios anger me. they stick around for far too long and end up playing 20-30 games and hang on the coattails of their talented teammates in order to win the cup. they take a spot away from a rookie who could use the experience and the money. i really don't understand why these teams bring these guys back. hockey is the only sport that allows these old geezers to stick around. imagine seeing a 47 year old come off the bench in a basketball game? it would look ridiculous.

May 22, 2009  10:43 AM ET

Sometimes Roenick is just a funny little man with his coments.

May 22, 2009  10:44 AM ET

If Chelios never complains then how does Roenick know about it?

May 22, 2009  10:48 AM ET

Shut up Roenick. Why are you talking? Oh wait you love the limelight. You can't get away. YOU ARE SSSSSSAAAAAADDDDDD

May 22, 2009  11:39 AM ET

NHL 94 was a sweet game! I think I was always the Rangers or the Flyers, flyers were the best checking team. What was that guys name who had like 20 concussions and had to retire???? Dang I cant remember. Eric Lindros! Yeah he was good in the game, I might be thinking about NHL 96 though for Sega Genesis.

May 22, 2009  11:48 AM ET

I don't like Chris Chelios either...but then, nobody really cares I'm sure.

I haven't seen a minute of the series, not having Versus. Are the Wings schooling a young Hawks team much like they did the Pens in last years final? Jesus. Doesn't this team slow down?

May 22, 2009  12:01 PM ET

'tis better to be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt"

May 22, 2009  12:11 PM ET

First off Chelli is 47.How many 47 year old men do you even see play in one game in today's NHL.ummm just him..Im sure he will retire after this season. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame! One of the best of all time!3 possibly 4 time cup winner! We in the D will miss you Chelli.Im sure he will stay with the orginization,Mr Illitch is very Loyal!!Roenick is just jealous that he doesnt have a cup!I think he is mad that Detroit didnt sign him for a farewell season so he could be like Bourque,Duschene,Robitaille and others that go to a team to win a cup then retire.Like Dallas Drake last year for the wings.See ya'll in the Finals....AGAIN!!!!!

The first game, maybe, probably. But the second game the Wings looked tired, and sat back too much trying to rely on a 2-1 lead. The Red Wings have been like my dog so far: if you make a mistake and let it get too far away from you, he'll pounce on the tennis ball and run away with it. Now how's that for a pisspoor analogy!?

IDK if it was the coach.. when Chelios skated out to hoist the Cup he looked like he weigheed 150 pounds with equipment on, dripping wet.
