Devils great to retire
The great career of a great Devil is over. Bobby Holik told The Post yesterday that he is retiring from hockey after 18 NHL seasons, 11 of those with New Jersey. Holik may have had the opportunity to return to the Devils for another season, or perhaps even play in Europe, although he is a naturalized U.S. citizen, born in Jihlava, Czech Republic.

Personally I was never a big fan of Holik simply b/c he played against the Pens so much, but he has had a very nice career.

He wasn't even playing in the playoffs anymore, until someone got injured. Holik was a great faceoff man.

Wait, did I read that right?????? Devils GREAT????
I guess The Post has a different standard for hockey greatness than, I don't know, the rest of the world. He was a solid defensive forward that was key in helping the Devils win 2 Stanley Cups but 326g, 421a, 747pts in 1314 games does not get labelled great.

He hoisted the cup twice in the 90's what more do you want? When a team signs a borderline ceremonial/serviceable contract with you because they want to see you retire with their team that is a pretty good indication that you are something special. He will be missed and I'm glad that he is bowing out gracefully.

lets leave the term devils great with players like scott stevens and marty brodeur, and players of that caliber..... theres no doubt about holiks contributions to the devils during the cup years.... but knowing your strong suits and playing to them doesnt make you great.... not when its forechecking and being strong on the puck..... at his size he should have been unmovable.... a good career for a good player who played a gritty game..... i dont see the devils retiring his number.....
