Oregon losing a quarterback

Quarterback Justin Roper has decided to transfer from Oregon and has been given his release. "Justin is a true competitor just like any other high-caliber athlete who wishes to be out on the football field as much as possible," Oregon coach Chip Kelly said in a statement Saturday. "I certainly can't fault him for that. I wish him nothing but success wherever he decides to go." Roper, a redshirt junior (in the upcoming season), was the Ducks' No. 2 quarterback entering fall camp and was coming off a solid Spring Game in which he was 22 of 34 for 301 yards and three touchdowns.

Looking at the spring game stats, one would think that Roper's got the stuff to be a starter at another school. What's the skinny, Ducks? How good in #1 on the depth chart? Who's going to be backing him up, now? How does he look?

As much as FN posters like to harp on the Ducks uniforms, there should be more action on this thread. Yo! Regulars! Roper is pictured in the white jersey while getting "an affectionate embrace" from a Bruin.

Good lord, this trend of transferring when it looks like you will get clipboard time rather than field time is getting worrisome. Every backup QB in D1 is seeming to get itchy and wants to go try his luck someplace else. Marve, Mustain, this guy...getting out of hand.

I whole-heartedly agree... what happened to the concept of team? Kids just don't want to compete any more... sounds like Kelly handled it the right way, no inflammatory talk there...

Yes. Kelly's comments are commendable.

Just when we finally got Marve transferred...

Lol. I don't think this guy's dad is that ego-driven. Let's all hope not.

But now he won't get to wear one of those cool uniforms! Roper really screwed up a good thing there.

Don't forget Threet, Newton, Mallett. Busy offseason. Makes you wonder if Drew Rosenhaus is running around campus.

Pampered since 6th grade QB decides to transfer because he is not going to get PT because he sucks. This is not news, this is a wakeup call for all those teenagers who always thing that they are way better than their actually success.

Even more hilarious. His name is Justin Roper. Like the boot. Made by Justin boots. The Roper. Hope he didn't grow up in Texas. That would have been pure hel l

Actually, Ryan Mallett changed teams because Michigan changed coaches into a spread offense. He's a dropback passer.

When I saw the headline I thought I would open this up and it would say...

"but gained a son-in-law!!"

He can go to UT Chattanooga and compete against BJ Coleman.

Maybe BJ can bring them a championship this year. Oh, wait, they're banned from the post season.

Is UCLA #33 hands too close to Roper's package?

May 27, 2009  10:37 PM ET

If so, is that the reason why Roper's hands are up in glee?
