Potential Pistons-Clipper deal

The Pistons are expected to cast a net far and wide this summer in an effort to return to the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference, testing the free-agent market and eying possible trade partners. Names like those of Toronto forward Chris Bosh, Utah forward Carlos Boozer and Chicago shooter Ben Gordon have been tossed out as Pistons targets, but the results of Tuesday night's NBA draft lottery may lead to one of the top centers in the league becoming available. The L.A. Clippers have the No. 1 pick and could trade it, but if they go through with the obvious choice of selecting Oklahoma power forward Blake Griffin, big man Chris Kaman could be moved. Griffin would be added to a collection of front-line players Marcus Camby, Zach Randolph and Kaman.

Yeah, Kaman is an upgrade over Kwame. But a top echelon player? Hardly. Detriot will need a LOT more than just Kaman.

There would have to be another team involved, since Detroit doesn't have the contracts to trade for Kaman, unless they give up Prince or Hamilton, which would be a bonehead move.

This could be a good move for the Pistons. But if the Clippers are smart (which they aren't) they should consider moving Randolph instead of Kaman. Expect his double-double game to return this year. Camby offers very little on the offensive end, and the Clippers need scoring help from the position.

Randolph's contract could make it impossible to move him, though I am sure that the Clippers will try their hardest to move him before they decide to move Kaman. Is Camby a free agent after this season?

Yeah i think camby is a free agent this season. what worries me is if kaman stays healthy and the clippers decide to move him, they lose a 20-10 guy who can defend. randolph, camby and griffin?randolph would rather take 12 foot jumpers than mix it up inside. camby isnt a consistent offensive option and griffin is too green.

Camby's contract expires July 1, 2010

The pistons traded Billups for A.I minus the answer.
A good trade for them is far from uncertain!

Why they keep saying to trade Kaman is completely beyond me. Trade Randolph. Yes, contract is massive but he also brings his great scoring and good rebounding, (and a little bit of drama, but never mind that.) Many teams can still use his services at his position. A package of Ricky Davis and Randolph is simply irresistible! (jk) No, seriously now, if they really take Griffin, and are dead set on keeping him, dress over Randolph salary with another decent player (not thorton, gordon) or a pick, etc...etc..That's what a GM is for!! Keep Kaman, darn it. He is young, has better attitude than Z-bo? (what hideous name!) and so give him a chance to be back to his near All-Star center form he showed right before he was injured.

Back to the article above. It makes little sense, anyways.
THEN again, isn't it the same Detroit Free Press that reported a while ago that CP3 will be in DET just because?

May 24, 2009  03:08 PM ET

i would rather see camby in detroit over kaman, chris kaman is good but not worth trading for

May 24, 2009  03:24 PM ET

Chris Kaman in Detroit could work very well. He'll finally provide a reliable low post threat they can turn to during games against half court teams...atleast he won't be shooting 3's all day, like the old Pistons Center. That's right, Rasheed, I'm talking about you.

May 24, 2009  03:49 PM ET

Love Camby, Kaman might be interesting. He's a (western) Michigan (CMU) product to begin with, so he would be coming home.

I agree ESPN, hes far from a superstar, but he is a HUGE upgrade over every single current Pistons front line player. Leaves Pistons room to land a top notch star in a different role (if thats even possible)

May 24, 2009  03:53 PM ET

My real question is what does it take to get the #1? I'd give away many combinations of Rip, Tay, (any other young player), and the 4 draft picks, if Joe D believes Griffen is supposed to be a Tim Duncan type presence for years to come...

Stones need a young superstar. Teams dont trade away those players, you need to draft them.

I bet if Detroit signed Iverson to a 1 year/$9 million dollar offer, he would take it and go to the Clippers for Chris Kaman.

What are they gonna do with the OTHER ball hog (Corey Magette)?

May 24, 2009  05:11 PM ET

oops...Magette's on GS...my bad

May 24, 2009  05:26 PM ET

To go along with my quote (#16), boy, this Clippers team they have with Keyon Doolong, Lamar Odom, Quentin Richardson, Corey Magette, Elton Brand, and Darius Miles is really something, huh?

May 24, 2009  06:55 PM ET

Get red of resheed please!!

May 24, 2009  07:11 PM ET

kaman wouldn't be their top guy that they get, he would just be a piece of the puzzle to get the pistons back to the top. with kaman it would allow the pistons to also go after bosh b/c then bosh would still be able to play pf as kamen plays center. and remember pistons have a lot of money, so there not going to just get kaman...but as a die hard pistons fan, i would like to see them trade rip as well, the offense focuses way too much on getting rip his jumpshots and i think he is taking away from stuckey reaching his potential.

May 24, 2009  09:34 PM ET

Joe Dumars will certainly do better than this.

May 24, 2009  10:13 PM ET

Actually, I'd go after Al Thornton over either of the other two...younger, less injury prone, and a solid 10-8 guy.
