Bobcats can't leave Charlotte

On Friday, the Observer reported that Bobcats owner Bob Johnson was looking to sell the team, raising questions for some residents about the future of the arena. The city agreed in 2002 to build the $265 million arena. Part of the deal was that the NBA team would operate the facility and keep most of the revenue from it. Can the team leave? No. The city may seek an injunction to force the team to honor the commitment to play here, or can enforce liquidated damages of $200 million in the first five years (2005-2010), $150 million in years five to 10, and a declining balance going from $85 million in year 11 down to $7 million in year 25.

Why would you go start a new franchise in a city, where a NBA team just fled from citing poor attendance and sales?? Hornets leave, and Bobcats come in immediately?? I'm sure some shrewd businessman like Mike Jordan would step in and buy the remains.!!!

The sooner Bob Johnson gets out of the sports business the better.

Bobcats need better ownership. NBA should work in Charlotte, I would think, unless N Carolina is more of a college basketball state than an NBA kinda state.

Want butts in the seats? BUILD A WINNER. It's as simple as that. The only place I know of where fans fill the arena to watch ineptitude is Madison Square Garden. The Bobcats will continue to hemorrhage money until someone not named Jordan is in charge of personnel decisions.

it all started in the dispersal draft. the bobcats passed on the best players available and took the worst players on every team. if you look at the players they passed on they could of made the playoffs the first year.

NC college is better than the nba Charlotte team.
Boring discussion!

Two words...Seattle Supersonics. Even though the City of Seattle had a solid lease in place the new ownership led by Bennett found a way to make it happen, and about half the price as damages being sought in the lawsuit. If there is money involved and the idiot Stern wants it his way, they can make it happen.

if he sells, it will have to be to a homosexual, Hispanic, or handicapped buyer.

Same with Golden State, Hllywd. I go to Warriors games, and even though we did poor this year, almost every game is a sellout!

If you have an exciting team to watch like Golden State which plays at a fast pace, OR if a team is in its first year (like OKC), ppl will go to the games, even if the team sucks. This won't work in all markets though.

Winning will not always bring fans to the games.

San Antonio, even during its championship runs and going deep into the playoffs did not sell out every home game.

New Jersey, during the years Kidd took them to the Finals and deep into the playoffs for a few years, had a hard time selling out...they were lucky to have more than 10 sellouts. Fans in the area would rather go see the Knicks suck it at the Garden.

Charlotte has an NBA team?

No, the Hornets of folklore (Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Kendall Gill, Glen Rice) left a long time ago.

Yeah bob stick to BET. Maybe the NBA will fold soon and the bobcats will not need to make that decision. If you can make a billion off of BET you should be successful in the NBA

Yawn....

Yup-
and where exactly is that better market? Vegas ?

All you need is to give your fans a glimmer of hope that your
team has a shot to compete deep into the playoffs-
the current squad doesn't....and their roster is HORRIBLE
with no future SHOT at a deep playoff run
It is 100% Jordans fault for compiling that roster

Agreed. Charlotte is a bunch of bench players and role starters trying to be stars...

Bob Johnson is a joke. You see how messed up BET is and the former employees talk about BET like a dog. I say sell the team they might do better under new management. I feel that it was a mistake to another sports team in Charlotte anyway. I wish Michael Jordan never got wrapped up in that mess he needs to go back to Chicago and put his energy there. They need him badly.
