It's still early, but Peter Laviolette, 45, seems to be the front-runner for the Wild's coaching job.

I never like Laviolette, I think they would be better off getting MacT.

I don't understand the NHL. They just stick to the same guys over and over again. AHL promotions worked in Caps & Pens case this year. There are coaches in Europe, Russia & AHL...none of them can do the job???

MacT...can't develop. He had arguably the best young team in league. 0 results

Another scintillating, in-depth article from the crack T&R staff.

He's an American and he's got a Stanley Cup. Sounds like a great fit for the State of Hockey.

May 24, 2009  11:07 AM ET

Not exactly my first choice if I were a GM, but he does have a Stanley Cup ring.

Not sure if he's the best option, but he's surely a good one. His time had simply run out in Carolina - every coach loses the room eventually - but it doesn't mean he's a bad coach. He's certainly a better option than most, and I'm not sure that a quick rebuild - which is what the new GM is looking for, from what I understand - I wouldn't want a first year coach either. The Cup Ring on this guy's finger gives him the grace he'll need to convert this team, and this roster, into the offensive team they want, in the time it takes to pull it off.

yeah he won the cup in a pretty stunning run, but otherwise his record is pretty mediocre. fletcher should bring in another fresh face to really start the wild in a new direction...

I thought he would be going further north. This move is understandable all but the thought that a Boston product will be coaching a Minnesota team. Isn't there some sort of rule written somewhere about that happening? Should I be preparing for the rapture?

I've seen milk ads longer than this article. As for the coaching job: Laviolette in my opinion would be a good choice as he's an offensive mastermind of the most elemental kind, wringing out firepower from players that typically don't have any. If it doesn't work out, then at least it'll be a stark change from the turtle-slow defensive system they previously had.

Hope he gets the position. Good man with a wealth of knowledge and excellent dealing with his players - young and veterans !!!

I can't wait! I can't wait! Will Peter get job? Why bring it up if no answer now? Suspense killing me.

What team was that? It for sure wasn't Deadmonton. And he never coached in Chicago.....

A few/couple of your developing players hit the "sophmore jinx". Your team does have good young fast players...they'll develop. Edmonton needs a legit tender though. So few pickings out there. As for Laviolette.........they should try him out. He does have a Cup ring.

Puny runts. Many more years of doldrums on the horizon for Deadmonton.

And why is it now everybody realizes what I was saying about goalies in Deadmonton?

Garon fooled me last year. I thought he could play the same game this year but i was obviously wrong. Me thinks the Oilers could swing a deal for a legit tender. They do have some assets. You'd think that they'd deal East for a tender.....not much to choose from though. The only names that jump out are Halak and Clemmenson.Lidstrom is the best d-man ever!

Right now it's almost pointless. They won't be any better if they trade away what little they have to get a goalie. And they need a really good goalie. Only teams like Detroit can get by with average goal keepers.

Is there answer yet? No decision yet? I know it still early, but come on! Maybe somebody leaning one way or other? Let's go!
