Four teams chasing Souray
Sources say the Devils are bidding for defenseman Sheldon Souray, an unrestricted free agent from Montreal who was traded there by Lou Lamoriello with Josh DeWolf and a second-round pick for Vladimir Malakhov on March 1, 2000. Souray, with the hardest shot in the NHL, would fit well in the Devils' style of tips-and-rebounds, but the Rangers, Oilers and Sharks are believed to be in pursuit of him.

Rangers can't fit him under the cap now, I would imagine - especially if they want the rest of the team to have any kind of quality (or they could just be the tampa bay lightning). It would appear that nobody wants to play for the OIlers anymore...though he would certainly be their top defenseman now that Jason Smith is out of there (unfortunate). The Sharks are in California, where his kid and ex are, and his good friend Craig Rivet, who got traded there last year. The Sharks are also a very good team that could take the next step next year (or be the new Senators), making them a Cup contender, which never hurts a team's chances of signing players. I gotta think the Sharks will sign him if he doesn't get blown out of the water elsewhere.

I think he's going out west for the same reasons that "goCanada" mentioned--especially since his kids are out there. I just hope they know what they are getting--a hard shot on the powerplay and a defensive liability. I think he was in the negative 20's in the +/-.

What the Devils need most is offense. I think Souray would be a good fit with us, despite his defensive liability. We have a young crop that can cover him. Those one or two goal games the Dev's have trademarked are not only risky but can go either way in the win/loss column quite easily.

Hmmm . . . a 4th forward playing for the Sharks? It would be a great move, since he'd technically be replacing Hannan, however, I think pairing him with Vlasic or McLaren would be a great idea. Either one would be able to offset his defensive liability allowing him to shine. The Sharks thrive on puck possession and Souray would make one of the deadliest power-plays even more deadly.

i really cant see souray play in a defensive system that new jersey uses. the guy is unreal on the powerplay but is just as bad as bryan mccabe defensively.

End it with those teams. Bring him to Minnesota. Seeing Souray and Rolston working the point on power plays would give any goalie fits. Hell the shootouts would also be very interesting especially if Rollys favorite shot rubs off. HA!

Nice that 4 teams are willing to overpay for a guy who was -27.
Ah, the new NHL. You gotta love how the GMs are screwing up the financial security they gained in the lockout.

Sheldon Souray is from Elk Point, Alberta. A town that's a little bump on the road about 2 hours East of Edmonton. Population: 250 (counting all cats and dogs).
With KLowe desperate to land a FA (any FA, even a RFA), he just might put enough money under his nose to make him want to consider going back to his old stomping grounds.
Sheldon Souray in Edmonton? Sure! It sounds right (And hopefully he doesn't have a spoiled American ninnie for a wife like Pronger, does he? Yeah, Suray an Oiler? Sounds real good!
