Bears, Briggs to reopen talks

Bears general manager Jerry Angelo always has maintained he and the team have had a good working relationship with agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Lance Briggs franchise-tag impasse notwithstanding. Rosenhaus, who has been in Chicago the past couple of days, brought with him several ideas regarding Briggs' contract that he hopes will interest the Bears.

Yeah, and pigs can fly for Briggs to resign. Angelo has said that he had intended to tag Briggs, pay him for one year, and then let him go. I am a die hard Bears fan, and would LOVE to see Briggs with the Bears for his prime, but I just don't see that happening.

he'd be awfully expensive for a guy who isn't even the best player on his own team

July 5, 2007  09:05 AM ET

Giving the money or let him go somewhere else, i hope he goes thru with his threat and sit out all season!!

July 5, 2007  09:13 AM ET

Why should he do that? He's getting franchised this year and released next year no matter what he does. How does it make sense that he turns his back on his teammates and sits on his butt in his final year in Chicago? Yeah, that makes a great impression to all the other teams out there thinking about signing him in 08....

I understand the desire for a long term contract, but so often you read about players that sign a long-term deal and then want to renegociate 2 yrs in because somebody else at his position just signed a huge deal and they don't feel they're being paid market value. (Pete Kendall, Jets, for example is mad about the recent increase in OG pay 1 yr after signing his deal) Why don't more players sign short deals and so they can continue to increase their pay as the market dictates? Briggs should take his $7mil for this season and do another deal next year for even more. If he signs a long-term deal now he'll be complaining in a year or two when some other LB gets a deal worth even more and he's locked in to a 5-6 year contract.

Blame the agents, not the players. They want longer contracts so a bigger portion of the pro-rated salary can be assigned to the bonus, that way they (the agent) gets more money up front.

It would be fun just to see what he'd say at a press conference after he said he'd never play for the Bears again. So if he signed a deal for 5yrs or whatever and he's sitting there, what the f does he say then. Oh that, just kidding. Never meant any of it. Maybe I should tell my boss I'm not going to come into work ever again and see if that works out for me!!

Perhaps this is a sign that Briggs knows how good of a situation he is in with the Bears. In the immediate future, the Bears are realistically the best chance to go to the Super Bowl in the NFC. No offense to Saints, Cowboys, or any other team that's been playing well, but the Bears have the most complete nucleus right now. Expect a better offense this year. Grossman may not have all of his **** together, but I'm confident his bad games won't be quite as bad as last year...but you never know.

Basically what I'm saying is, Briggs might finally be seeing the complete picture. I hope anyways.

ashman is right on point.

July 5, 2007  11:28 AM ET

There was rumor that after the Olsen deal, Rosenhous was impressed with Angelo and the Bears eagerness to get a "fair" deal done. Let's hope the Briggs saga will carry over into more good will between sides.

July 5, 2007  11:58 AM ET

Briggs isn't the best LB on the team. And Chicago is NOT going to pay a defensive player more than it pays Urlacher. And that's a fact. Briggs needs to accept it or else sit out the season. If he sits out and wants to come back for weeks 10-16, I think the Bears should suspend him for 4 games out of spite.

Either that or trade him for a first round pick. The Redskins are always willing to trade their picks...

July 5, 2007  01:31 PM ET

Even though he handled the sitaution poorly at first, Briggs is still one hell of a player and the Bears could really use him. I think he just saw free agents hitting the jackpot elsewhere this year, and got mad that he didn't have a chance to strike it rich. Here's to hoping a deal gets done.

July 5, 2007  01:42 PM ET

BearDown makes a great point...If and I do mean If he signs a deal what is he going to say to the team and the fans of Chicago?

This is all about the Bears signing Olsen, they have the same agent.

July 5, 2007  02:09 PM ET

No team on this Earth with Lance Briggs on it, would p!ss off the Bear Nation more than Green Bay. I say the Pack needs to sit down with him and talk seriously. Lance then would have sweeeeet revenge....

July 5, 2007  02:12 PM ET

That is fine let Briggs goto the land of cheese, it will not make difference with the old man at QB throwing INTs and getting sacked......

July 5, 2007  04:14 PM ET

You Packer fans are morons. The Bears own the right to him as a franchise player, there's no way in hell they would even consider trading him to Cheeseville.

July 5, 2007  04:37 PM ET

July 5, 2007  05:15 PM ET

I hope they show this guy money and their Respect....for what he has done. Its not just about Urlacher. Teams can't just focus on how to control Urlacher when Briggs is on the field. I like him.....Pay the man.
