Sources: The Boss is in poor health

George Steinbrenner's declining health is an open secret in Yankees quarters now. An insider described Steinbrenner as "sometimes real good, sometimes real bad, but there are more bad moments than there were a year ago. It's not a dramatic drop-off, but the slide is continuing." Steinbrenner has attended exactly one Yankees game this season, the home opener. The Tampa resident didn't even go to nearby Tropicana Field when the Yankees played the Devil Rays.

His health seems to swing just like the Yankees have been playing. "sometimes real good, sometimes real bad..."

Every day is a bad day in the Evil Empire, and Swinebrenner is the soft, insidious, and rotting core.

I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy, but it saddens me to hear about Steinbrenner. Without him they are just an overpaid underachieving team. With him, you go out of your way to either love or hate them. Best wishes George, you make hating the yankees more fun.

Steinbrenner's as much the face of baseball as he is the Yankees. This is sad to hear.

July 5, 2007  09:35 AM ET

I'm not going to make fun of an old man in failing health. Despite his horrible temper, his ruthless treatment of employees (removing dental coverage for certain staff), and at times his disrespect for the game, he is somewhat of an ambassador for the game. It is what it is.

This is a crossroads in the history of the Yankees.

Dear Mr. Fungus Man:

If George Steinbrenner is "the face of baseball" is Barry Bonds the buttocks?

July 5, 2007  10:13 AM ET

When Steinbrenner goes it will be an end of an era.

July 5, 2007  10:26 AM ET

I have to agree with All-starz on this. No matter how you feel about the Yankees, Steinbrenner changed the face of baseball. From the hilarity of revolving door managers, to proving that a deep wallet doesn't mean a thing in a 162 game season. Here's hoping for better health for him.

TMN,

Yeah, I'd say that's about right. Lots of power, but you don't really want to get too close, for many many reasons.

July 5, 2007  10:42 AM ET

George, you have given many things to many in need. Take care of yourself and let somebody else take over. It is now time to relax and heal.

July 5, 2007  01:01 PM ET

My source (Mr. Wilhelm) says that Big Stein will be okay...he will continue to subsist on rainwater and grubs.

July 5, 2007  02:26 PM ET

i think his money is declining, not his health....

July 5, 2007  03:29 PM ET

could the yankees actually be respectable if steinbrenner left them, or if he left the world altogether.....?

July 5, 2007  03:57 PM ET

"Boss" passes the baton.
Man clearly running the Yanks?
George Costanza.

IS FUNNY HOW ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD CAN'T BUY YOU GOOD HEALTH, I RATHER BE POOR AND HEALTHY THAN FILTHY RICH AND SICK...

July 5, 2007  04:15 PM ET

THE SAD THING ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION IS THAT, THE OLD **** HAS POURED HIS HEART AND SOULD AND LIFE IN TO THIS ORGANIZATION. SOME JOE BLOW WILL END UP RUNNING THE SHOW!! WHILE HE IS ON HIS DEATH BED WAITING FOR JIMMY HOFFA AND BILLY MARTIN TO COME GET HIM..

For better or worse, the Boss goes all out for the ring.
That's all any fan anywhere asks of their team.

July 5, 2007  07:48 PM ET

As a point of honor, I humbly retarct my remark about Swinebrenner. It's bad form to disparage the ill, and the sick at heart.
