Magic losing Turkoglu?

The Orlando Magic don't like talking about it now. They don't even like to think it. And rightfully so, in their first conference finals appearance in 13 years, only three victories away from the NBA Finals. But there is a dark cloud looming quietly over their playoff run in 2009. And It's not just LeBron James. Orlando's future isn't quite as bright as you might think. The Magic's go-to guy will be long gone in two months. Hedo Turkoglu has decided to exercise his option in June to become an unrestricted free agent in July, opening himself to the highest bidder. And that probably won't be the Magic.

Look at what happened to the Kings after they let Hedo get away?

May 26, 2009 07:59 AM ET

Right? The Magic would be dumb to give up Turkey. He'd be on the next team we play and he'd kill us.

May 26, 2009 07:59 AM ET

Not surprising, almost every time, in every sport, as soon as a team gets interesting one or more key players end up leaving.

May 26, 2009 08:14 AM ET

Why is this even brought up now? Even so, Hedo will be a big loss for the Magic. Hedo brings some type of intangible that teams cannot match. Hedo and Lewis brings mismatches. If Jameer comes back strong next year then maybe it won't hurt as much. Reddick and Lee might be able to step in for Hedo.

Thing is Magic is over the cap so they will be paying a dollar on every dollar they give in luxury tax. So lets say he gets a four year 40 mil deal from Oklahoma City - if Orlando matches the offer they will be paying 80mil - 40 to Hedo and 40 to the league. That said there is a chance the bad economy will prevent teams from spending so Orlando maybe able to keep at a discount price for a year like Chicago did with Ben Gordon.

He is clearly helping sway LBJ Knicks way by torturing the Cavs so I sure hope he gets paid big time...

Hedo on his way to Toronto!!!

i'd like to see cleveland not resign varejao and pick this guy up using the money from wally and ben's contracts. then move lebron or hickson/jackson to PF

If you can't beat him; get him. I don't think that will sit well with LeBron.

He could not be replaced if the Magic lsoe him
he's the only one that actually goes to the hole and as you
said- he creates a ton of mismatches....

If anything- the magic should consider moving Lewis in order
to re-negotiate Hedo's contract- lewis is a lot more replacable
than Hedo-

Typical stuff. Player gets hot in a free agent year and all the talk is about him moving on. The Magic will end up keeping hi,.

keeping him. My bad on the typo.

May 26, 2009 09:37 AM ET

The Magic will try to keep him. Hedo knows his value, as he's been killing the Cavs. His assist totals are great, he's not afraid to knock down the big shot, and he's not a bad shooter, either. D@mn right he's going to exercise the free agent market. With Lewis' and Howard's contract accounting for the bulk of the team's payroll, and Nelson making some nice $, they're going to have to figure something out.

Yunno, I don't know why more of these guys don't ask for a deferred compensation plan. Instead of $40 mil for 4 years, why not $40 mil/4 years, but spread that out over 10-20 years? The great majority of these guys end up broke soon after leaving the league. Spread that money out, it's like winning the lottery for the next 1-2 decades. But then what do I know? I'm not a millionaire.

I hope so. I think he just wants to test the market. I don't invision him actually wantimg to leave.

Yeah but who wants that abortion of a contract Lewis got on their books?

Now that I say that the Knicks could use him.

May 26, 2009 09:50 AM ET

I seriously doubt it's as hopeless for the Magic as far as losing him as it sounds. I suppose you have a different perspective when you've actually been watching a team play all season as opposed to just watching the highlights and recaps. The Magic aren't the Clippers or the Grizzlies. They will probably find a way to resign Turk, unless he secretly hates being given the ball in closing situations....I dunno.

May 26, 2009 09:51 AM ET

Same old Magic. It's been awhile since they made a bonehead move to further set the team back, so it would in their nature to do just that by letting Hedo walk. I've seen them all since the team's inception. Even during the best of times mismanagment seizes the day. Whether it is a hockey GM or a burned out coach, this is team that is its own worst enemy.

May 26, 2009 09:58 AM ET

It's his right to do this but the timing sucks

Who would play/start at the PF position for Orlando if they got rid of Lewis?

Maybe an actual PF?

NOT EXACTLY! (about a free agent year stuff) He 's as good this season as he was last season when everybody finally noticed that he has excellent skill sets.

It is just magnified now that they are having more success. Hedo has been working really hard and it's not totally about contracts .
