SEC commish: Coaches should cool it

Don't be surprised if Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive tells his football coaches to cool it after numerous secondary NCAA violations have popped up in the last five months. "I'm going to have conversations with everybody in the league and make some observations," Slive told The Birmingham News. "Our focus should be on the great student-athletes in the league, the competition between institutions and to enjoy the rivalries. The focus needs to be on the field and not off the field."

Lane Kiffin wins the 2009 SEC Secondary Violation award. In his acceptance speech, he erroneously pointed out four primary violations commited by Vanderbilt, Miss State, Kentucky, and Ark. Kiffin was quoted afterward as saying, "I didn't want the loser schools to feel left out, so I made up some crap about them, you know, for conference pride, but I'm not going to apologize and Slive can bite me if he thinks I should because Daddy said I don't have to if I don't want to, so there!"

Calls to the AD's of the respective schools were met with laughter at Kiffin's toothless smirk, but most agreed his wife would do well in a wet t-shirt contest.

Gator,

Arkansas had one bad year. How are they a loser school?

May 26, 2009  08:28 AM ET

put Kiffin on double secret super probation

May 26, 2009  08:40 AM ET

Ah, the daily Kiffin story.....the caption for that pic should be:
"Hey, I am NOT a jack-assss!" :-)

May 26, 2009  09:02 AM ET

Put him in timeout... kneeling down, facing the wall, with a dunce cap on

May 26, 2009  09:06 AM ET

Yep, nice of T & R to put up a pic of Kiffin while pimping a story about NCAA violations, considering he's the poster boy for such activity.

May 26, 2009  09:25 AM ET

5 months of violations before finally deciding to speak up. Dont act too quickly there buddy. What is the a USC investigation.

May 26, 2009  09:41 AM ET

He has a point. These schools are obsessed over what amounts to secondary violations - nothing to even be penalized for. All it does is just create an atmosphere where everyone hates the next guy and wants to "get him" since he got them. It's getting ridiculous.

Auburn has a group of boosters who are paying investigators to "find" dirt on Alabama. Their fans brag about it on all their websites. There are constant rumors made up that are just getting to be ridiculous.

WHAT?!? Auburn fans looking for dirt on Bama??? Nawwww....

Seriously, though, I think you're right, JoeKidd. Everybody making a big deal out of piddly stuff just makes the conf look bad, so it's best to lay off that stuff, keep your own house in order, and get ready to play some ball.

Please see the quotes - Lane said it - not me.

Awesome! I think Kiffin you try to one-up Spurrier and start calling all the other coaches out personnaly at the SEC meetings. Heck, he should start picking fights with the Big 12, Big 10 and Pac-10 coaches. Bob Stoops or Jim Tressel vs. Lane Kiffin.

With ego's like Kiffins, Meyers, Spurriers and Miles in the SEC, does this guy really think they are going to back down??? Nice try commish.

Yes, the SEC has more than it's fair share of egotistical coaches.

SEC might win in the egomaniacal competition, but the Big XII has T-Rex Mangino, meaning our coaches win on cumulative volume and weight. 2nd place would be ACC, thanks to 'Fridge. 3rd place is Notre Dame; Jabba the Weis by himself is bigger than all 12 of the scrawny SOBs now coaching in the SEC.

I'm afraid for Coach Saban if he is still coaching at Bama (Yes, I know, he's a hired gun and will be gone next year, or the year after definitely) when we play ND again. He would just be an appetizer for Weis.

I'm terrified for Bevo's safety when Kansas comes to play in Austin next November. If T-Rex starts walking toward him carrying BBQ sauce, I'm calling 911.

And Ralphie is not safe either

I lose sleep whenever an SEC coach gets a secondary violation***. I take the violations that seriously.
I just hope saban doesn't figure out how to get a crimson smoke machine working for the next batch of recruits down in Tuscaloosa, and if meyer realizes how impressive mock press conferences can be for prospective recruits, well the end times are surely near.

***Okay, I'm lying about that.

If they DO back down, what in the world will T&R do for daily material?

They always have "Marve predicts he'll pick a big booger", or maybe "Weis calls his mom, just to say hi". Typical stuff.
