The Colorado Avalanche have sweetened their offer in pursuit of Patrick Roy, according to a report out of Montreal. Roy was reportedly offered the head coaching job last week and could have the GM's post too, according to ruefrontenac.com. The website -- operated by locked-out journalists from Le Journal de Montreal -- reported that Roy has been offered both positions and the former goalie has already told Avs president Pierre Lacroix who he would hire as his assistants if everything falls into place. Roy, according to the report, wants to hire former Maple Leafs defenseman Sylvain Lefebvre (currently an assistant in the AHL) and Guy Boucher (Drummondville's coach in the Quebec junior league). Roy is currently the coach of the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL.

How stupid could the Avs be? It is hard enough to be a coach and GM but having a hot head do it isn't the smartest thing. And can anyone name a great coach in the NHL that was a great player, it doesn't happen.

"Control over the team" ?? He doesn't seem that smart to me !!

A new week, a Patrick Roy T&N. I am glad FN is keeping up with the usual pace!

Snoozer!

As a Red Wings fan, I think the idea of the Avs hiring Roy and both coach and GM is a Brilliant move :) Just imagine how much fun their losing, post game press conferences will be with Patty "sounding off." My bet is he'll make Quenneville and his $10K fine comments look timid.

Should be fun to watch <VBG>

Ummm....Jacques Lemaire?

His hockey mind is as sharp as anyone out there. Sure, he may be a hot head, but what would yuo call Brian Burke? I think the only part of this that is stupid is that they want to give him both jobs - if he can handle being GM, which I think he can, he should be smart enough to decline the coaching position and put someone else in there. Someone with a little re-building experience, not a new hire who will have little to no chance of being successful with a team that is terrible. A coach with a name will get alot more grace than a guy who's never coached. Bring French Bob Hartley back to coach, since Roy had a relationship with him, let Lefebvre learn off him in terms of the NHL level of coaching, and concentrate on turning this team around. Especially if they are hiring Craig Billington to be is Ass't GM, like rumours are saying, since he isn't anymore experienced than I am. At least Bretty Hull has an experienced co-GM, you know?

Will he set up a set of goalposts on the bench or in his office that he can talk too?

May 26, 2009  09:49 AM ET

and yes, Frank the Tank, you have a great example there, but if you want to take it a little further - Scotty Bowman was apparently an amazing hockey player in his time, who had the game stolen from him due to a head injury, so there are two coaches who were good hockey players. Brent Sutter is another example from today's coaches. Guy Carbonneau, while not an elite player, was very effective for a long time, and it certainly wasn't HIS coaching that cost the Habs their season this year...

That is an aweful lot of responsibility given to a QMJHL coach? More importantly if they do get Roy and he manages to pry Gustavsson from Burkes cold, dead hands will that be the beginning of the rebuilding for the AVS? Did Sakic and Roy get along? He seems to be somewhat of a hothead/polarizing figure. Denver seems pretty confident in his abilities though...

Both jobs? Is this really from the New York Post?

May 26, 2009  10:21 AM ET

Sweet!!! It will be alot fun seeing the Wings dominate the Avs and watching Patty Wah's reaction behind the bench. To think that he also could selecting the talent that plays, even more comedy will ensue.

May 26, 2009  11:23 AM ET

Hire him the WINGS goalies need a punching bag.

May 26, 2009  11:30 AM ET

i said it once, i'll say it again, he wants the Montreal job, so that he can help bring the cup home again and be able to say "you needed me in nets AND behind the bench for the cup!!" his ego is huge, and he would just LOVE to be able to do that in Montreal!

May 26, 2009  12:04 PM ET

Coach & GM won't work especially with Roy.

May 26, 2009  12:22 PM ET

Are these guys off their rocker? They should sign him as Asst Coach and Goalie Coach, but Head Coach and General Manager?!?!

What does a goalie know about the hockey world except perhaps maybe penalty kill... weird.

May 26, 2009  01:05 PM ET

This could go down as one of the biggest blunders in sports history if the Avs follow through with this. outside of playing, what experience does he have outside of running a junior team? NONE!!!! what about the draft? NONE!!!! the minor league system? NONE!!!! the waiver wire? NONE!!!! free agency? NONE!!!! massaging the salary cap to fit? NONE!!! i think i could go on but i won't. the AVS need a proven guy to turn around a once storied franchise not an ex goaltender with no NHL front office experience.

May 26, 2009  01:06 PM ET

another gimicy coach hiring around the league. this guy has done an ok job in JR's and now a profesional franchise is going to give him the keys to the entire franchise. i think it says more of Colorado and how desperate they are than Roy's abilities.

May 26, 2009  01:07 PM ET

Does Barry Melrose sound Familiar to anybody.....

May 26, 2009  02:31 PM ET

at least the avs arent dumb enough to offer the job to Pat Quinn. It seems the oilers are destined to become irrelevant. Kevin lowe just can`t let go of the old boys club. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EDMONTON. YOU SUCK

he owns, runs and coaches one of the best junior clubs in canada. what have you ever done?

Roy has had his team in the upper tier every single year that he has been involved with the team, and looking at the steal he got for Esposito last year (2 first rounders) his team will continue to be dominant for years to come. He is actually an excellent gm and an excellent coach. You probably just don`t like the guy, but you also have to accept that he was a leader in both dressing rooms he played in. When Roy got up to talk between periods NOBODY interrupted him. Ask any player that played WITH him, not against him and you hear the same response. the guy was a warrior and he would do ANYTHING to win, those sound like good coaches qualities to me!
