08:18 AM ET 05.27 | I'm getting word that USA defender Oguchi Onyewu, out of contract after a prosperous career at Belgian champion Standard Liege, has rejected an offer from Bundesliga survivor Borussia Moenchengladbach and plans to showcase his abilities at the FIFA Confederations Cup next month in South Africa in hopes of landing a deal with perhaps an English or Spanish club. Italy's Catania was also interested at one point.

while it would have been a great pickup for M'bach, it was a smart move by Gooch to avoid going there

Otergod - couldn't agree more...looks like with turning that down, he's got his sights on the Premiership. It would be great for a club like Fulham to sign him and let him learn in a relatively low-pressure atmosphere. Some clubs - like, oh I don't know, facking Newcastle think giving some players half a season is good enough to get climatized to the league.

I hope Gooch signs for a Premiership squad and he sticks it to Newcastle when they play...oh wait, that's not going to happen next season unless it's Carling / FA Cups.

Dempsey played a huge amount this year. What are you talking about? He's been in the starting eleven all season long, is one of the highest scoring midfielders in the EPL, and in the last half of the season Fulham rarely even ever subbed him out at any time, despite the return to health of both Gera and Kamara. He was getting 90 minutes almost every game, and his starter status was one of the most cemented of all the club's midfielder contingent.

Anyway, Gooch was right not to go to Gladbach. I still feel that Bradley probably made a mistake going there, in fact. Gladbach will continue to be under the threat of relegation every season for the foreseeable future.

Were you watching the same team I was? He either wasn't used, brought on late, or taken off early in about 18 Premier League matches. That isn't good. That tells me that he isn't playing enough. For a guy that kept Fulham in the damn league two years ago, he sure does get a lot of thanks.

Dempsey missed out on the first 1/3rd of the season, but after that he started nearly every match..... and if he were taken off, it was almost always near the 80 min mark....

prem would be nice, but i wouldnt mind seeing our starting CB move to Italy where they are known for producing solid defenders...

eh bradley is getting solid PT in the Bundesliga... i wouldnt have been surprised to see him get picked up by another bundesliga team if M'Bach were to have been relegated....

at first, i thought it was an odd move, but he's assured PT and now he'll come back even more experienced and ready for next season in the bundesliga...

good for him. 'Gladbach sucks and will be fighting to stay up next year. he doesn't have to only go to the EPL. I think Spain would be just fine for him too. Or Germany, but with a much better team. No matter where he goes, he needs to pick a team that finished this season in the upper half of the table at the very least. preferably a team that has some sort of European cup competition, either CL or Europa League. and one that WILL give him PT. I think Everton could be a good spot for him. It sure would be a boost for the NATS with Gooch playing in front of Howard every week, but I dunno if Everton are in need of a CB or not.

why is it that only a couple of teams overseas express interest in americans? fulham, gladbach, who else am i missing?

I could definitely see the spurs coming in to pick him up. They are going to sell some people this summer and IMO I think they could use him. Its a good club but the biggest downside is they wont be participating in Europe this coming year.

I agree, I'd like to see Onyewu in Italy.

May 27, 2009  11:23 AM ET

Italy or Spain please. We need more Americans playing outside of Germany and Italy.

Catania would be interesting. It sounds like they might be overhauling their defense this summer - selling some of their better defenders. If so, and they hire a good coach after Zenga leaves, it might provide Gooch with playing time opportunities. Let's wait and see how well he plays at the Confederations Cup.

The first line was meant to read Germany or England.

lol, my brain adjusted for that . . .

1. Why is Gladbach such a bad pick? With gooch on the team and Bradley's getting better, i think the team will be safe to stay up next year. besides I can then watch him on Gol TV. So, why would Gladbach be a bad move. There are really no guarentees on any team unless you're talking about the elite ones--and they're not gunning for gooch's services anyhow.

2. Dempsey played 35 times, scored 7 goals in the EPL. And then he played 5 more times in the FA and scored once. While the first few games of the season he was left off the field, and a couple others he came in with 10 minutes left--after that he cemented his starting position and played the next 26 games in a row. Most of the time he played all 90 min--rarely being taken off for the last 10 minuted for Gera. In short, Keeper, I think you're thinking about the beginning of the season, cos' he's pretty much a shoe-in starter since.

3. Italy? You want Gooch in Italy, eh.... Well, be prepared for his massive frame to be used as an excuse for every little Italian forward to fall to the ground writihing in pain claiming they've been fouled. Italy will be Yellow Card Alley for Gooch. He's better off in England or Germany where there are a lot of other big forwards and bodies in general where his strength will be seen as an asset and not exploited by much smaller players.

Also: Marseille, Monaco, Bayern Munich (briefly), Newcastle, Everton, Preston North End, Sheffield Weds, Rennes, Ajax, Herenveen, PSV, Club Brugge, all those Scandanavian teams I won't bother to list... Its not a big list... I would like to see it get bigger.

That's what she said... ;)
