Colts coaching changes irk Manning

The on-going uncertainty surrounding the Indianapolis Colts offensive coaching staff, coupled with a lack of communication regarding that uncertainty, isn't setting well with quarterback Peyton Manning. "I can't tell you what's going on,'' Manning said during a break for one of the team's organized team activity sessions today at its Westside complex. "I will say I don't think it's been the most properly communicated scenario around here.'' Tom Moore, coordinator since 1998, and Howard Mudd, the offensive line coach since '98, each retired earlier this month because of concerns with the NFL's pension plan. Owner Jim Irsay plans to bring them back as consultants, ideally for the start of training camp on Aug. 2. Not knowing the details during the process irritated Manning, who faced losing his two most trusted coaches.

stability builds winners, O-line coaches are more important than most realize. If the line is not squared away on game days bad things happen, just ask Dallas.

The system and coaching staff wins games... Not quarterbacks, and Peyton knows this.

Let's see how well he does with a new system in place.

If a new system irked Jason Campbell, he would have went crazy by now.

A pissed off Manning is a bad sign for the Colts...

May 27, 2009  07:56 AM ET

Rub some dirt in it, Peyton.

May 27, 2009  07:57 AM ET

all of a sudden things are not so hunky dory. lets see how he does with his first sign of adversity in the nfl.

Colts will be interesting to watch this year given all the change. Gotta agree with Peyton, the entire team should have an idea of whats going on, what direction the team is headed and how they will handle everything. If you've ever worked for or run an organization of any kind keeping the employees informed, particularly during extreme change, is important to maintain a cohesive group.

May 27, 2009  08:10 AM ET

Gee Peyton - aren't you the Offensive Coordinator? Thought you would have been kept more in the loop...

May 27, 2009  08:12 AM ET

"Mommy I want my binkie"--Manning....l....

May 27, 2009  08:12 AM ET

Uh oh!! I think I just posted about this behavior in TNR #1. Peyton's about to take his ball and go home!

May 27, 2009  08:15 AM ET

WAH WAH WAH keep it internal and go to the coach and complain or the owner.. for the money they are paying Manning they would listen to him and appease him going public only makes him look like a whiner

May 27, 2009  08:21 AM ET

strike the shephard and the sheep will scatter...buckle up Peyton, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

May 27, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Dude has had the same OC, OL coach since he's been in the league. Go whine to Jason Campbell or Alex Smith, who've had to learn a new offense every year. I'm sure they're REAL sympathetic.

About as bad a sign as you can get.

I think you guys are missing the point. Peyton isn't upset about the coaching changes, and there definitely isn't going to be a new system to learn. I'm sure he'd prefer if Moore and Mudd stayed, but that's not what he's upset about, he's upset about the lack of communication between the powers that be (Irsay/Polian) about where those two guys stand, and what roles Christensen and Metzelaars will play. This is an important thing and they all should be on the same page. It looks like they aren't, and that's a problem that Irsay or Polian needs to remedy.

May 27, 2009  08:39 AM ET

I predict that the Colts will NOT win the division, or even earn a wildcard.

May 27, 2009  08:40 AM ET

He's got his Manning face on.Go lick an Oreo Peyton.

How Dare those 67 year old men retire so they can collect their pension and upset Peyton! My god he's had 11 years w/ the same everything. Man up, get Reggie Wayne to change your diaper and just deal w/it. If a team that has 22 starters that have never played for another organization and all the "new coaches" who have been w/ the team for 5+ years as assistants can't figure it out then that's a really sad statement about the players. Tom Brady gets a new Off. Coord. every other year and new starters all the time and you don't hear him bitching about how impossible it is to go on in the face of all this adversity.

Are you pretending to be this stupid, or are you really unable to comprehend a simple article? Peyton isn't upset about the coaching changes, he isn't upset that Moore and Mudd retired, he isn't upset about any of that. He's upset that there is little to no communication from the top of the organization down as to where they stand. Are Moore and Mudd back on as "consultants"? What exactly does that entail? When will they be back? There are a lot of things those players ought to know, and from Peyton's comments it appears that it hasn't been addressed with the team.

So basically you misinterpreted the entire quote and have no idea what is exactly going on, but you felt like you should run your internet mouth anyway. You are a moron.

Thats a good point, and I undertand it behooves the Colts to keep Manning happy.
BUT - other than Manning, name 1 other player in the league who feels he should have any say, or "be consulted" on coaching and front office decisions being made in May? Unless his business card reads "Peyton Manning: Star Quarterback/Assistant General Manager" the owner and/or GM has no obligation to communicate the details of ongoing negotiations with coaching/front office types to him during the offseason.

Considering the team is in OTA's with their coaching situation still up in limbo, it's probably best if someone speaks up and tells the organization that the players really have no idea what's going on. I'm sure Peyton isn't the only person on that team who is in the dark. The reality of the matter is that Peyton already knows the system, his role on the team, the playbook. Him voicing this opinion, to me, seems more like he's looking out for the younger players on the team who wouldn't say anything privately or publicly, but are confused as to who they report to and what roles Moore and Mudd are going to play.
