The CEO of a New York investment firm that's flush with cash was working with Chicago sports owner Jerry Reinsdorf to buy the Coyotes one day before the team filed for bankruptcy protection, according to public records. It is the first time that Tony Tavares, a former baseball executive who runs Sports Properties Acquisition Corp., has been identified as collaborating with Reinsdorf's investment group to buy the hockey team. The agreement was signed May 4 with the city of Glendale, where the Coyotes play their home games at Jobing.com Arena. The document, obtained by The Arizona Republic, did not reveal a purchase price.

My guess is the purchase price was much less than Basille's. Or the NHL would take this bid seriously. So would the bankruptcy court.

The article didn't mention if Moyes knew of Reinsdorf's intentions, or if this was a backdoor deal pushed by Gary Bettman and the powers that be.

Money talks...I guess his did not talk loud enough.

Jerry is looking at owning his 3rd professional franchise...........WOW is he loaded!

May 27, 2009  10:00 AM ET

My guess is it was less then Basille's, Moyes knew about it, and cut the back end deal with Basille as he knew the NHL would rather have an owner who keeps the team in AZ.

Bring em to HARTFORD! BRING BACK THE WHALERS!!!

May 27, 2009  10:42 AM ET

heck yes the Whalers deserve a comeback! But I'm still pro-Winnipeg or Toronto first. The Whale beauty jerseys, just awful on-ice product. Get a team back in those uni's, though, fast!

I miss having a team in Winnipeg or even Quebec City. Though having a new team in TO and having them do better than the Leafs would be very funny. Love the Whale jerseys! The pine green and off white was truly amazing. Wouldn't mind buying a Shanahan one right now.

er...mini me...

I heard this just after Mr. Crackberry put in his offer. And yes, it was a lot less money than he was offering, something in the area of $20 mil less. Bettman was still going to approve it first.

Is it really so hard? There's no argument: Phoenix has been losing money since they moved there and that's a FACT!! Screw phoenix and their 200 something fans and give'em to Balsillie already! Why why why why WHY would you even want them to stay? To lose another 74 mil?

May 27, 2009  06:17 PM ET

Yea, I'm sure Reinsdorf really wanted to buy the Coyotes before the whole bankruptcy proceedings started. Sure. He was like just a day or two away from making his bid I'm sure (or so Bettman is telling him to stay). Haha
