06:53 AM ET 05.27 | Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams delivered a strong message to quarterback Tarvaris Jackson: Work harder. Jackson is locked in a fight for the starting quarterback job with Sage Rosenfels, and he has been put on notice by Williams, an outspoken team leader. "I talk to Tarvaris all the time (and) tell him you have to put in the time," Williams said recently on Sirius NFL Radio. "This ain't college no more. This is the NFL. You have to put in more time than you are used to putting in. If you are putting in four hours, you have to put in eight. You have to put in more time than what he's doing. I think if he puts the right time in, he will be a great quarterback in the league." Williams is one of the most respected veterans in the Vikings' locker room, so the Pro Bowler's comments carry significant weight. Jackson played poorly in Minnesota's first-round playoff loss to Philadelphia last season, throwing a critical interception that was returned for a touchdown.

.....so do his feet

poor work ethic = poor performance. How long till Jackson figures this out? I mean come on you are fighting off the immortal Sage Rosenfels for your job. Not like it's Manning or Brady breathing down his neck. This is what Peterson is stuck with.....man he will bolt if this keeps up.

I like it... That's what veterans are for, but.... Sage Rosenfels?

Maybe he just doesn't mind doing "okay" and collecting a check. Some guys just don't have the same competetive drive once they start getting a check.

he will mind if he wants to keep getting one.

I see the vikings fan base has come to comment about thier team. Wait ...what fans? From the lack of post on this story they don't have any fans.

Has anyone with the Vikings told Fat Williams to quit doping?

May 27, 2009  08:07 AM ET

Team leaders are so important to the success of any team. Williams deserves credit for staying on him.

Or maybe Williams just wants Tavaris to win the job so talk of that other QB will just die down. (don't say the name or a thread magically appears)

I like this from a veteran, but I dont think jackson can beat out rosenfels. Sage actually played well last year when given the chance. He might be a decent qb this year.

May 27, 2009  08:13 AM ET

OK - I'll be the first. Does any of this matter after they bring #4 in?
I didn't say the name... won't go that far.

Personally, I don't think "time" is going to do much for this kid. He's overmatched in the NFL.

I agree with you on this one.... He has the heart and desire of an NFL quarterback, but not the skills, unfortunately. I desperately want him to prove me wrong, but I just don't see him leading the team successfully into the post-season, ever.

Or Brett Farve.

Maybe he could just take some performance enhancing drugs just like you buddy!

We agree that he doesn't have the skills. Apparently Pat Williams says that he doesn't have the desire either. I guess Jackson is proving you wrong about his desire.

Epic fail at attempting to insult Vikings fans. LOL

Jackson better listen to what the guy says. You never know how some people react to steroids..

Weird. The owner of the Dodgers wants Manny to apologize to his team mates for missing games because of getting caught with banned drugs. This guy calls a team mate out who can play while he is suspended. Go figure.

Memo to Pat Williams: don't believe the ingredients listed on diet supplements.

May 27, 2009  11:02 AM ET

Despite the "banned substance" issue (whihc the NFL shares culpability on, in this particular case), Williams comments are spot on. Just ask Matt Leinart what can happen if you aren't willing to put in the extra work....
