Bulls eyeing Syracuse point guard

With two first-round picks in what is widely considered to be a weak draft, it's impossible to predict what the Bulls will do on June 25. Nevertheless, news that the Bulls worked out Jonny Flynn over the weekend is intriguing merely because most mock drafts have the Syracuse point guard listed as a lottery pick. The Bulls own the 16th and 26th selections. Flynn worked out with St. Mary's point guard Patrick Mills and Arkansas point guard and Marshall High graduate Patrick Beverley. The Bulls didn't announce the workout, which is a fairly common practice. The Bulls also conducted a workout of wing players with reputations of athleticism that included Arizona???s Chase Budinger.

Why do the Bulls need a Point Guard?

May 27, 2009  08:03 AM ET

You have D rose....why? I cant even think of how they could use this as a bargaining chip in a trade

May 27, 2009  08:04 AM ET

yeah like they are going to dump the whole Derrick Rose project and start all over.

"With two first-round picks in what is widely considered to be a weak draft, it's impossible to predict what the Bulls will do on June 25. " but we'll throw this out there as well........more stellar reporting from the Tribune

They aren't going to dump Rose... They need to draft a PG to come off the bench. Kirk will likely be unloaded and who people don't really thing Gordon will be back. Who's going to come in and play spot minutes at the guard spots with them gone?

May 27, 2009  08:18 AM ET

Sorry for all the spelling errors. Still sleep writing. But you know what I meant.

May 27, 2009  08:26 AM ET

The Bulls thinking is crazy. They had a good season and their playoff was a success even though they didn't make it out of the first round. The players that played in the playoffs did really well. Why would you want to mess that up now? Their thinking is that they will draft a PG and trade Captain Kirk. I don't know if that would be a wise move. I say keep what you have and add more good veteran players. Let them grow. Let it simmer. Let it marinate so it will taste better.

They need a big man that can score in the post and I'm sure they can buy one from the Clippers or wait to get in the Amare, Bosh, Yao Ming sweepstakes stakes. It makes sense to keep Johnny Flynn, make Ben Gordon walk, and move Heinrich to the 2 spot because no team will take his hefty contract..

May 27, 2009  09:03 AM ET

Rose and Hinrich and now Flynn??? How many pg's do they need?

May 27, 2009  09:18 AM ET

Is Paxon kidding or just mentally retarted!
If you have Rose as your star point guard why would flynn be an option?
Shouldn't the objective be ti have a sufficient bench?
Sure Hinrich, Brad Miller are the key bench players but those two equal a seven man rotation.
A big man that can get them easy baskets and finish at the rim is what they need.
To round it off they need a complete bench!

lol....'dump hinrich' ??
it's not so easy to dump a player that has a HEFTY contract
and simply isn't that good/is a back up.....

I don't see this happening at all

No - that's a smart move. With the current rules are if you can get anywhere you can score alott and be helpful on defense that's why fast players that make great decisions are very valuable. That's what made D'Antoni's Phoenix so successful. Isiah tried that as well but he used Steve a washed up Steve Francis and inconsistent Marbury that's why that experiment failed.

The Cavs played Mo Williams and Delonte West who are both point guards at the guard positions last season that's why they did so well in the regular season and dominated their weak opponents in the first and second rounds.

Basically if you have a dominant big man and a sizeable small forward you can get away with playing two small guards - the upside is marvelous. Cavs had Lebron and big Z to make it work. Chicago now have Brad Miller and Tyrus Thomas. Phoenix had Amare but Isiah's big man was Eddy Curry... another reason it failed.

To cut a long story short - Paxson is smart in going for another point or shooting guard and moving Heinrich to the 2 spot.

The problem with your statement is that you are talking about
REGULAR SEASON success......the 'small' cavs ain't doing so well
NOW against bigger/better teams in the PLAYOFFS

All of your commentary is fine until you consider that the Bulls don't have much notable talent at the power forward and center spots. Noah and Thomas can't score. Miller, Noah, and Thomas are bonafide bench warmers in the NBA on a good team. The Bulls are doing their due deligence in looking at guards as well as centers and forwards, but if Paxson actually chooses a PG in the first round he is an idiot.

May 27, 2009  09:57 AM ET

The Bulls just wasted their time. Flynn is going to be long gone by the 16th pick.

May 27, 2009  10:00 AM ET

Flynn will star in the L.

Chris Paul???? He's pretty short. I wouldn't even say 6 feet without shoes on. He seems pretty good to me.

yes- there are ALWAYS exceptions-
but Flynn ain't CP....
CP was a top 5 talent coming out - Flynn is not

Also- not taking anything away from Paul- but what exactly
has the guiy won ? he's young & we obviously have to give
him time- but he hasn't meade it out of the 2nd round yet

Personally, I think Paxson should take a good look at [i]Tyler Hansbrough [i] or [i]Earl Clark [i]--one of which should be available at 16. Most of the draft boards have Flynn gone by then.
