Did Crosby jinx Penguins?

A year ago at this point in the playoffs, Sidney Crosby shook NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly's hand and leaned in a little toward the fancy Prince of Wales Trophy, making sure not to so much as graze it. Last night, after a short conference with veteran teammate Bill Guerin, the Penguins' center and captain did more than touch the large reward for the team winning the postseason Eastern Conference title. Following the series sweeping victory that clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup final, Crosby grabbed that trophy with both hands, lifted it with Daly hanging onto it, then took a short skate around the RBC Center ice with it and shared the moment with his teammates. "Last year, obviously, we didn't have the result we wanted," Crosby said of the team's loss in six games to Detroit in the Stanley Cup final, "and we figured we'd touch it this year."

Like this will make a difference. It takes more than skating around with a conference cup to beat the dynasty known as the WINGS. Maybe if he skips three times behind the net and runs into the boards while holding up his left leg will help.

the jinx is that horrible excuse for a playoff beard. please shave that crap off. people's insides are starting to hurt from laughing so hard at it. now easy on me there pens fans. i didnt say anything about his game play or goals in the playoffs so dont get all upset.

May 27, 2009  08:31 AM ET

Congrats to the Pens and their fans.

The jinx means nothing, and jms I agree on the playoff beard even Billy Guerin was giving him grief about it. But this is a much different Penguins team than the young and untested team that met Detroit last year in the finals. I think anyone expecting a carbon copy of last year's SCF is going to be sadly disappointed.

Thanks Dave...on a side note, how nuts would that be to have three major sports championships held by the same state at one time? I need to start looking it up to see if that would be a first.

Thanks Phillydave. You are mature and a class act.

Jinx? Nah. Like Sid said, he didn't touch it last year, and they lost in the finals.

This Pens team has confidence that I don't think they had last year at this time. They probably discussed "touching" the POW Trophy, and knew it would make no difference.

If the Pens win (knock on wood, which I am right now), then the Phillies, Steelers, and Penguins will all be defending champions.

Thanks! Unfortunately, there is just no denying how good Crosby and this team is. And expect the Pens will win another Cup. Which I'm torn on... I'd love to see the Pens lose but I don't want to see the Wings win. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Pens/Blackhawks series. :)

May 27, 2009  08:55 AM ET

It is a jinx, you don't want the conference title, you want the Cup, don't touch the trophy.

C'mon. You want the team in the East to win. You are not gonna root for the Wings. Nah. ;)

Keeping your fingers crossed for the Blackhawks? Give it a shot, cause they could use all the help they can get.

I think the Blackhawks self-destructed the other night with their 474 penalty minutes or whatever the total was. Detroit will finish that series tonight.

I think it was around mid-500s actually. :)

There is no good scenerio here for me so I'll just let you guys enjoy and start warming up my trash talking for next season. :)

Last night on the broadcast, they said that Lemieux touched the trophy in 1991. So much for the jinx that year and the next.

On a side note, I like how NBC is demanding back to back games on Saturday and Sunday to get their grubby hands on the broadcasts. Potentially five games with Pierre McGuire...I don't think my blood pressure can take it
