Memphis faces NCAA allegations

John Calipari is one of a handful of college basketball coaches to take two different schools to the Final Four. Before long, he may be the only one to have both of those appearances vacated from the NCAA record books. On June 6, the University of Memphis will appear before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in connection with allegations of three major rules violations under Calipari, including the charge that one player -- Derrick Rose? -- didn't take his own SAT. Calipari is not personally implicated in any of the allegations. Of course he's not. He wasn't implicated in the UMass fiasco, either. He just happened to be in charge when the bad stuff happened at UMass. He just happened to be in charge when the bad stuff may have happened at Memphis. The man is to NCAA investigations as Joey Dorsey was to bar fights. He's just unlucky, darn it!

Congratulations Kentucky! Too bad you didn't look more closely under Lil' Johnny's knickers before you threw the kitchen sink at him.

May 28, 2009  08:56 AM ET

But you can bet he paid his income taxes, unlike a prior Memphis coach.

It goes to show you that as long as you win it doesn't matter what the trail of destruction you leave behind looks like**. Someone else gets left holding the bag.

**unless you're Isiah Thomas in which case winning does not matter.

If a coach has a history of being in charge when these types of things happen, the label of cheater eventually has to stick to him instead of the respective schools.

Isiah will win at Florida International...

... have you noticed all the NBA players that Isiah drafted/traded for in the league?

David Lee, Nate Robinson, Jamal Crawford, Jamal Tinsley, Tracy McGrady, Zack Randolph and countless others.

The man knows talent... and college kids will listen to him... the way he listened to Bobby Knight while in school.

We don't need no stinkin' SAT's!!

Talent means nothing when you can't coach. Ask the Cowboys or Notre Dame.

This is gonna be interesting to watch, especially to the little dude down in Louisville.

May 28, 2009  10:56 AM ET

I suppose this means even more Tiger High "fans" are going to change allegiances.
This bodes well for Tarheels merchandising, most likely.
