Nugget: Lakers bought Game 5 win

The NBA has an integrity problem, as shrill and annoying as a referee's whistle. If the competitors don't trust the truth in the final score, why should we? Did the Nuggets lose to the Los Angeles Lakers 103-94, or were they robbed by referees who gave favorable calls to a marquee franchise that pumps up television ratings? Does the league want to see superstar Kobe Bryant in the NBA Finals rather than the tattooed bad boys of Denver? In an accusation that goes straight to the heart of the sport's integrity, one member of the Nuggets shook his head in disgust after the game, and could not believe how cheap it was for Los Angeles to buy a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals. "The Lakers paid $50,000 to win that game. They got their money's worth," said a Denver player, not wanting to be identified for fear of retribution from the league.

I'm going to say it was J.R. Smith....I guess it was the refs fault that the Nuggets went cold to start the fourth...

O so there not posing n walking by our bench taunting us..sore losers..and believe me it would cost alot more than 50g's to throw the game..what an ignorrant comment

I'm so done with the NBA. This was the first playoffs in a long time that I actually watched the majority of the games during every round and there were some great series and games. But, the refs were so pro Lakers in game 5 it was ridiculous. Billups getting a offensive push off on a clear layup and foul. No calls on Laker hacks under the Denver basket all game. Phil Jackson complaining about the calls in game 4 and getting all of them in game 5. The NBA wanted Lakers and Cavs final, it looks like they're not getting the Cavs, so they're going to make damn sure they get the Lakers for TV ratings.

Sports games these days are being fixed for marketing situation. I hate this!! Any of u wanna bet that cavs will make history and beat magic 3 times in a row? One word for it: FIXED!

May 28, 2009  08:09 AM ET

I been saying this for years the whole Lakers 3 peat was a fixed bunch of B.S. Timothy Donaghy admitted fixing the 2002 western conference finals. For some reason the Lakers makes the league money I think its a load of crap. I think the Lakers 3 rings should be revoked cause its obvious that the games were fixed. Phil Jackson should be ashamed of himself for saying that he didnt get calls the Lakers are horrible truely a hollywood team full of cheaters. I am beginning to think the NBA has been fixed since the Bulls first 3 peat.

May 28, 2009  08:12 AM ET

Foul Calls i spose they could potentially lead towards fixing a game.......remember players still have to make and miss shots.......

May 28, 2009  08:16 AM ET

One good thing about the Denver Post, they like to stir things up but only to their benefit. The Denver Post did the same thing w/ the Mavs series. Now they are actually acknowledging that the Nuggets are the bad boys. I don't know if this article gave the Nuggets players advantage for the game or not. For the Denver Post to say that the Lakers paid $50,000 is so ridiculous. That's bad for the Nuggets and that's very bad for the league. Anyways I will applaud them for having the balls to accuse the Lakers. The problem is not the Lakers but David Stern and his mobsters. He is making it more obvious and the days of Donaghy seems miniscule to what he is doing right now. David Stern does not know "consistency and following basketball rules".

Nobody wants to hear that bull shyte Nuggets you got beat get the **** over it !!!!

May 28, 2009  08:20 AM ET

WOW. Your team loses and "everything is fixed". What a bunch of hosers.

ive said this before and ill say it again, nba refs are the worst in any professional sport. as long as steve javie, possibly the worst individual ref in any pro sport, is still calling games you can be assured that outcomes are not totally decided by the players.

and yes, the lakers recent 3peats are tainted if not paid for. the sacramento series and the 2 consecutive portland series were obviously league mandated laker victories. tons of shaded calls going the lakers way in every crunch time situation. its so sad. the nba should be the greatest of fan sports. but it has become on par with WWE "entertainment".

May 28, 2009  08:31 AM ET

I really don't care who wins the series, but the officiating does need to be cleaned up and consistent... and what's up with Jones being called for palming the ball? Everybody in the NBA palms the ball anymore... just laughable

May 28, 2009  08:34 AM ET

"The NBA wanted Lakers and Cavs final, it looks like they're not getting the Cavs, so they're going to make damn sure they get the Lakers for TV ratings. "

Now they take away Dwight Howard's Technical foul. I'm not so sure they 'wanted' the Cavs after all, the way this series is being called. Too many fouls called altogether.

But then again, if the Cavs lose , they'll have had plenty of chances.

Give me a break.....
if the refs REALLY wanted to they could call a foul
on EVERY posession during a game....
- it is absolutely the most SUBJECTIVE reffing job there is cause
there's SO MUCH contact.
-do superstars get the calls YES- it's been that way for EVER
- do refs miss calls- ABSOLUTELY- like when mo threw the ball at
Dwight....that fixed too ???

Anyone who is complaining about the refs 'costing' Denver the
game is missing the point- the Lakers OUTPLAYED them
- you get a bad call- like when Kobe got called for an OFFENSIVE
foul - GET OVER IT- it happens both ways

May 28, 2009  08:37 AM ET

I guess games weren't fixed in Denver with all the NO calls. It's basketball officated by humans. No one is perfect. Ref a game and see how many calls you get right/wrong. Stop shooting 3s and take the ball inside.

May 28, 2009  08:37 AM ET

Billups is probably too much of a gentleman to have made this call but it is correct and he was a victim. Bryant is one of the dirtiest players in the NBA but gets away with his antics on and off the court by sweet talking the referees and anyone else who will listen. On the other hand, the Nuggets still have to make their shots and shooting from the perimeter is no way to win games.

Bill Kennedy saw Mo throw the ball at Howard but he didn't do anything. The replay shows that he was trailing the play and he saw the throw and then he pretended to look away as if he didn't see it.

May 28, 2009  08:44 AM ET

The real problem here is this article in the Denver Post. Wow! Way to just throw that out there. How about:

An unnamed source told me they saw a ghost on the court helping Kobe. Kobe paid his living family 100k for the help.

Such reporting integrity!

May 28, 2009  08:45 AM ET

Maybe the nuggets can shoot the damn ball properly before bitching and moaning like school girls. This team is the collection of the biggest bunch of thugs: Dhantay Jones, Smith and Andersen. All collective loosers.

Actually, I think the holding call in football is the most subjective because even the refs admit that some form of holding happens on every play. It seems refs in all the major sports have been lackluster at best in the lsst few years

remember teh play with about 2 min to go where anthony got raked across teh arms?? no call.
