Kidd rethinking free agency?

Jason Kidd might be analyzing the wisdom of relocation this summer based on what's happening as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers struggle to make it to the NBA Finals. The Mavericks view re-signing Kidd as their No. 1 off-season priority. Kidd will enjoy the options that come with free agency. He finds himself in much the same situation as Karl Malone was earlier this decade when the Utah Jazz power forward went to the Lakers for one final season chasing a ring and came up empty.

oh so they are implying he might retire?

Getting them guarenteed Play-off W's is hard, just ask Mo-Williams.

Getting a Championship is like 349-93-49348309483984 times as hard.

I bet Chris Paul hopes he signs with a team in his division.

Either way he is in good shape. He has too many choices especially when you are a free agent. If the Mavs makes a move of acquiring a good low post player and defender then he might stay. Shaq or Kaman would be their best option.

He actually got better since he left NJ, but Devin Harris has him beat. His style of play is still effective with the right team; but with the new point guard era his defense sucks. Lets Go Nets!!!!!!!!!

"The Mavericks view re-signing Kidd as their No. 1 off-season priority"

I think the Mavs #1 priority is figuring out what the hell
they want to do with the direction of their franchise.

hey J KIDD! sign with the LAKERS, D-FISH needs some help and u can give Jordan Farmar and S Brown some tips on how to play the position...LOL!

Yup. And it's probably getting rid of players with 10,000 miles on their odometer and a bunch of stiffs who can't rebound...

May 28, 2009  09:12 AM ET

Cavs make a lot of sense IMHO...they have a lot of PG's that are shoot first type of players and LeBron is best if not allways taking over PG duties.

what about Orlando? ok, they dont have room under the salary cap, but I could imagin a sighn and trade including draftpicks and young players (lee?)...they have a lot of shooters and D12, Kidd could throw the ball to...furthermore he could understudy nelson

I think orlando will fall short especially coz they are lacking playoff experience...kidd has been to the finals twice...if they find a fair way to make it work, Orlando should be interested (just as the Cavs, Lakers and Celts)...and Dallas should start rebuilding anyway...take Dirk und build around him...kidd could land a pick and a nice prospect to take a step into the right direction

wtf are you talking about? Do you even watch basketball? This team went deep into the playoffs. With an injured allstar, Howard, an injured stackhouse and an injured devean george. You need to think about what you say before you make yourself look like the biggest idiot on fannation. Second round of the playoffs in the TOUGH WEST. That's all I need to say.

i'm sick of that guy

May 28, 2009  09:39 AM ET

If he wants a title he better get the hell out of Dallas won't happen there. For the Mavericks or the Cowgirls LMFAO!

May 28, 2009  09:40 AM ET

A07 you are an idiot...he will come back and just see who else comes this offseason to the mavs!

Haaaaaa! ok I'll wait....

May 28, 2009  10:09 AM ET

Mavs have some Aces up their sleeves, beware the Draft!! Make up some new nicknames for some big name big men.

May 28, 2009  10:13 AM ET

I think the Mavs did ok this season...but I just dont see them going deeper than conference finals at best...an injured Stackhouse or George dont change anything and I dont see them getting better from within, while Kidd will be a year older

On one hand Cuban is a guy, that wants to win it all or nothing...So be prepaired for an overhaul (maybe he is waiting until 2010, but he should start right now to get something for players, he wont get anything then). On the other hand Kidd cant wait until 2010/11 und therefore there are about 4 teams he suits und which are capable of winning it all...Cleveland, LA, Orlando and maybe Boston...with Houston beeing a far shot too, but I think, compared to Dallas, it wouldn't imrove his chances of getting a ring unless, they trade T-Mac for someone that can get out of round one

maybe a Kidd+Howard trade for T-Mac+goods is thinkable...but IMO at this point the "goods" would have to bee really good! Howard next to Artest and Battier, with Kidd getting the ball to them and especially Yao sound nice to me...Kidd next to Brooks makes sense too

(but I dont think Mavs would do it)

May 28, 2009  10:18 AM ET

Mavs will probably not go higher than a 7 seed with or without Kidd next year, again.

listen genius-
losing inthe 2nd round is not 'deep' into the playoffs.

before you go spouting off and making yourself look foolish-
what EXACTLY is their direction ?
are you confident the Mavs as presently constructed can WIN
a title ?? or are you happy getting bounced in the 2nd round?

lol...you're blaming them losing on injuries to stack & George ???
lol...ROTFL.....

May 28, 2009  10:33 AM ET

yeah, exactely thats the problem...they are stuck in the middle of the pack...no real hopes of impoving enough to compete for the title...not bad enough to call it a rebuilding process...the Spurs are kind of dying but can excapt it at this point, the Nuggts and Magic are emerging and LA and Cleveland are at the top

Teams like Utah and Dallas have to either retool on the flight (like Houston tried and will try to do) or start over completely...with Dirk surely not willing to ruin thenext few years of his career, I think the former thing needs to be done...I love Kidd and think, he can do something for most teams in this league...I just dont see him beeing the difference for the Mavs...if they can do a trade, that gives them another differencemaker or a young player who could make a difference in about 2 years, they should do a sign and trade...but in the end, Kidd would have to like it and that shortens the list of teams such a deal could be done

May 28, 2009  10:38 AM ET

I have a sick feeling the Mavericks are going to get Lebron (thats if Cleveland doesnt win it all by the time he hits free agency)

May 28, 2009  10:47 AM ET

I dont think, we should get into that, but I see only 2 possibilities for LeBron come 2010 and Dallas is none of them!

May 28, 2009  11:06 AM ET

Both the Lakers and the Cavaliers could use a point guard who is not afraid to run the coaches' plays and tell the stars where to be.
