GM Sutter to coach Flames?

Without officially announcing a new head coach at an absurdly-delayed media conference, the Calgary Flames' general manager all but unveiled one anyway. Himself. Darryl Sutter, the sequel. "Right now, I'm the best one," he replied, only half-jokingly, when asked to name a frontrunning candidate to take over from the vanquished Mike Keenan. "If I find out at the end of the search that I think I'm the best candidate, then I am the coach." He's the coach. The mere fact that the flinty Sutter didn't sarcastically dismiss the possibility outright, as he has so often in the past, indicates the option is being seriously considered.

Craig Hartsburg is the best candiate.

He went to the same "executive search" l;essons as Dick Cheney. Cheney was head of GWB's search team for a running mate and picked...Dick Cheney

Hartsburg is a better building coach than one to take over an underperforming team - if we weren't sure before, he proved it in Ottawa this year.

If Sutter names himself coach, he is setting himself up for failure and a firing. He won't have enough time to do both jobs - cripes it took him to years to get Jokinen as it is! - and he'll have noone else to blame next year's playoff disappointment on if he is both coach & gm.

Ted Nolan might not be a bad option, but we don't know how well he can handle star NHLers, since he ever only had Hasek as a star in his entire NHL career. I woulda liked Tortorella for this job, but he's taken now. Peter Laviollette? The only thing against him is that he's American in a very pro-Canada city. Therrien might be right out of the league after the mutiny he was the victim of this season. The Flames already buried Playfair, so I think they need a name-brand coach, but there just aren't that many out there. I'd love to see Pat Burns in there, but who knows about his health? I think Jacques Demers could be a gem there too, if he weren't so committed to broadcasting now. Tough call unless Brent Sutter comes available.

I think it would be a very good option.

And well enough.

He is probably just delaying until his brother makes up his mind to come and work for him.

Does anybody remember actor Walter Brennan?

Absolutely. The guy won multiple Oscars. Glad somebody else remembers him aside from me.

Unless folks are into real old movies they would only know him from Support Your Local Sheriff or maybe The Real McCoys.

The last time he coached, they went to the Cup Final. Whoever the new coach is,has to limit Kippers games played. He cant or is unable to hack the work-load. Ever since Kippers been playing 70+ games per year, his game has gone south, and so has the Flames' chances in the play-offs.Lidstrom is the best d-man ever!

What about Orr

I can watch a John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, or Henry Fonda western anytime. I own a ton of them on DVD ( along with many others).

My pre-Mario days of attending Pens games would qualify as irrational. Usually the attraction during those days was the visiting team.

One of the Duke's best work. You can't go wrong with a John Ford film.

Bob Boughner is an ex-Flame and the current coach of the Memorial Cup winning Windsor Spitfires. The trend in the NHL right now appears to be to hiring "just out of the game", relatively "young" head coaches (Dan Bylsma being the best example, I guess). I suspect if Brother Brent doesn't get a good, long hard look at running the Flame's bench then it isn't impossible Darryl Sutter might look Boughner's way ...
