Why Leafs won't sign Bouwmeester

Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke laughs at all the rumours about his team, even if he can't address them. He has heard the stories that he is prepared to sign the Sedin twins, Jay Bouwmeester, Michael Cammalleri and just about every other breathing free agent of quality come July 1. If the Leafs go big-money on a free agent, it may be for a defenseman. And don't bet on the defenseman being Bouwmeester. Burke has been critical in the past of his fellow managers overpaying for defensemen. Burke says that having signed Scott Niedermayer and traded for Chris Pronger, both of whom are going to the Hall of Fame, and built a Stanley Cup champion around them in Anaheim. The thing about Bouwmeester is, no one really knows how good he is or how adaptable he would be to a high-pressure market such as Toronto. The Leafs probably will monitor the Bouwmeester sweepstakes, may even make an offer for him, but would be more suitable to go after Mike Komisarek, coming off a lost season in Montreal.

So the leafs are not looking for a young franchise defenseman? I guess I'm not too surprised. Hows that Jonas Gustuvson signing going?

I wouldn't want Bow either. He's going to be highly overpaid, along the lines of Brian Campbell this past season, and will likely never live up to the contract he signs. If he's smart he'll go to a Columbus or some team like that where he can stay relatively obscure - the way Eric Brewer has in St. Louis while he has continued to not develop into the elite defenceman he was expected to. I don't think Bow is a bust, I just think he's a bit soft, and I would never want him to be the highest paid player on my team. A #2 or #3 defenceman for sure, but never my building block.

Bouwmeester is over-rated and soon to be over paid. Anyone who gives this guy a 7 yr deal for upwards of 6 mil is either disparate or crazy. Is he good, absolutely, is he a #1, probably, but is he worth a max contract, no way.

There are a lot of overrated players in the league as it's so thin guys seem better than they are. I haven't seen Bowmeester enough to make a statement on him.

But having watched all the playoff games this year, I know with certainty that Chara is overrated.

I think the article is correct when it says, "no one knows how good he is." JBo hS PLyed for some really awful Florida teams and has been the star on most of them. Who knows what he'll do with some real talent around him.

Caps are desperate, and probably crazy as well...I'd take him. Can't be any worse than Schultz...

Kaylin thanx for the brilliant post...move along nothing to see here. The hockey is going to be superb but i feel Pitt will lose a lot of one goal games.

Bouwmeester is not overrated, he plays more than any other player in the NHL and is really fast. But it is practically a done deal for him to go to his hometown Edmonton. It is a done deal.

I was impressed with him in the games I saw FL play us ( and after watching Chicago in the playoffs would venture that he's better than Campbell ). He had the wheels to keep up with OV and he looked to me like the anchor of their team. I'd love to have him here but don't think there's any way we can afford his price.

I sincerely hope so. But that's the first I've heard of it.

With Chara's very good defensive game and his ability to be one of the NHL best offensive d-men,i dont know where you're seeing his weaknesses. He's no Ray Bourque, thats for sure, but to me he's worth every penny of his 7.5 million yearly salary. I believe this is his 3rd Norris nomination in his career to boot. His defensive game is near the top in d-man as well. He simply dominates in the corners. When the NHL's teams' top lines regularly dump the puck into his defensive partners corner, you know he's doing something good. Did he have a bad year offensively in the play-offs? Yes. Defensively? Hell no. Even without his offense,he's a helluva d-man.Lidstrom is the best d-man ever!

He's pretty good I agree. But I'd never give him a Norris.

And like I said he hurts if he hits but is easily avoided.

Therefore I think he's overrated. Not even close to Lidstrom or Bourque in his prime.

Nothing personal, just my opinion.

When you have contracts up in a few years for Semin and Backstrom you can't pay a guy like Bouwmeester 6 plus mill. If someone signs him for like 5 mil a year, its a solid signing. Just because he is the best UFA at the time doesn't mean he is worth the money. Look at the Rangers signing Gomez or the Flyers signing Briere. They were the best at the time, but were they worth that money, NO way.

I can accept that but there's not too many d-men that can bring what he brings to the table. Pronger? Yes.Phaneuf? Yes.These are the only d-men IMO that bring everything to the table. I may have forgotten a couple,so dont kill me for it. But there's not too many d-man that can bury the puck and play a rough and tumble game, and do it well. Lidstrom is the best d-man ever!

I also think Celine is overrated. He can stink with the best of them.

Pronger has proved his worth. Most hate him but he has proved long lived and capable. But he's not great either.

I think Neidenfeurher is up there and has had a great career. I never thought he was all that and then some in Joisey but he has show me things since going to Anaheim. He can play tough enough and his offensive abilities are clear.

I suspect Chicago has one or two good ones who have not fully developed yet either. But are close.

Once Lidstrom retires the field will be wide open.

It certainly wouldn't hurt having him come to Toronto. But only if they don't break the bank to do it.
