Spartans recruiting New Jersey prospects

To the casual football fan, New Jersey may not seem like a hotbed for football talent. But the Garden State routinely produces as much Division 1 talent as states like Michigan and Illinois. Last year New Jersey had 27 prospects rated as three-star recruits or higher by Rivals.com. Illinois and Michigan had 27 and 30, respectively. n recent years, the Spartans have not had a strong presence in New Jersey. But MSU coach Mark Dantonio has decided to try and change that this recruiting season. Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi is the primary recruiter for the area and has spent several days during the month of May visiting schools of several top New Jersey prospects. Early indications are that Narduzzi's diligence is paying off.

Nice story, except you left out the part where you name one single player who is interested in MSU that lives in NJ.

This is true. I am glad they are going around, kicking the tires, and seeing what comes out. Having said that, Dantonio better not forget where our recruiting base is, and that is MIchigan with the rest of Big 10 country thrown in. So concentrate there and if you can pluck an under the radar guy from Florida and Jersey, then great.

I've been in Florida and also (unfortunately) East Lansing and Newark. MSU is gonna have a lot easier time getting kids from New Jersey than kids from Florida to go to school in East Lansing. ****ing sun is visible in East Lansing maybe a half dozen days between Thanksgiving and Easter.

They should try getting a limo.

A lot of great talent in the Garden State. The Big 10 has done well to recruit the state over the years so it makes sense for M.S.U. to finally get themselves involved in New Jersey recruiting.

I've been in Florida, East Lansing, and Newark as well. FIrst things first, East Lansing is actually nice and it is not a warzone like Newark and some parts of Florida. But despite that, I agree with your conclusion that MSU will have an easier time getting kids from Jersey than Florida. Fewer competition among local schools makes it easier for out of state institutions to grab players.

Finally, I do have to laugh at your slamming of East Lansing weather when you are from the NoVA area. I will agree if you want to narrow your definition from mid-March to Easter, but Michigan's winter blows away a mid-Atlantic winter. Give me high 20s and snowing over mid 30s and poring rain.

The Calipari school of recruiting, eh?

I agree with your sentiment, but Dantonio has to keep massaging the happy hunting grounds in MIchigan first. This is the priority. KEep the local coaches happy, so players get sent to us from Detroit and other areas of the state. Then look to the rest of Big 10 country. Jersey and Florida should be treated like the cherry on top. IF you can get one great, but if you can't then no worries. Don't waste resources going after reaches.

When does it get up into the high 20's during an East Lansing winter? While it's true that the winter weather here in the DC area isn't as mild as Austin, it's nowhere near as ****ing cold as Michigan. Summers weren't all that mild in Austin, I have to admit.

JRM I hope you're just funning with them. I travel all over the US and there's great places and great people everywhere. Plus.... only us old geezers give a crap about the weather. Kids could care less... that's why they wear shorts to school in January and go swimming in February.

:)

I love this statement the most. Michigan, Illinois, and New Jersey all have terrible high school football.

To build a program that will challenge for the conference championship six out of every ten years, Dantonio's staff is going to have to develop pipelines for out-of-state talent. I wish them success.

You clearly weren't watching the last NFL draft. about 1/3 of the kids taken in the first round were out of NJ. There's talent in that there state.

I agree. I believe 9 picks from the first round came from New Jersey.

New Jersey has great high school football so I have no idea what SouthernMiss613 was talking about.

Not putting down the people, just the weather. East Lansing is overcast 90% of the time for about 4 - 5 months. No ****ing sunshine for 4 - 5 months. It was ****ing depressing. And cold. Really cold. Southern boys don't care for being cold. Tennis club I belonged to had 14 courts - 2 of which were outdoors. That should tell you something about their weather.

Eugene Monroe, BJ Raji, Knowshon Moreno, Malcom Jenkins, Brian Cushing, Donald Brown, and Kenny Britt all first rounders this year from NJ. It's no Texas or Florida but definitely not terrible high school football like SouthernMiss613 claims.

One of those who assumes there's no football above the Mason=Dixon line. Alot of the studs on the southern teams come from the NE but most just assume they're from the south because they play college ball there.
