Paterno not only Big Ten coach eyeing Rutgers
hopeful Rutgers fans should know this: Joe Paterno might be the most vocal, but he isn't the only Big Ten coach who would welcome the Scarlet Knights into the league without reservation. "I am definitely for the addition of another team, and it would be great to bring in a team from the Eastern market," Tim Brewster, the Minnesota head coach, said from his office yesterday. "I certainly believe Rutgers is a tremendous candidate, one that obviously makes sense." Brewster was not stumping for Rutgers, although the Phillipsburg native is more familiar with the growth of the football program in Piscataway than most of his counterparts. He was pushing for a 12th team, a topic he said the conference coaches informally discussed at their meetings this month. Most agree it is a necessary step to stay competitive with the Big 12 and the SEC, leagues that already have a lucrative championship game at the end of the season.

No more Rutgers stories until T&R finds a different picture of Schiano, one without the creepy urban cowboy. They're a New York team, for crying out loud. This picture probably includes 20% of the cowboy hats in the entire ****ing state.
As to the thread, Rutgers has historically sucked at football, been pretty credible of late. Can they be expected to maintain a level of talent and play that would keep them in the middle of the Big 10* pack most years?

Rutgers - are you kidding me? If not ND, how bout Pitt, Cuse, WV? Uh, I just threw up in my mouth.

'Cuse sucks really, really bad at football just now, as in there are probably a half dozen HS teams from Florida, Texas and California that might beat them. Rutgers gives the conference an "in" with a lucrative media market that they don't get with Pitt or WV.
Sorry about your digestive issues. Listerine might help initially, then maybe a Tums or two. It's a common problem among people who read T&R's articles.

This is stupid. Expanding just to get bigger is dumb. Rutgers adds nothing athleticly. Notre Dame is still a better pick. They are better in and have the potential to be amazing in the revenue generating sports. Notre Dame is not geographically a new region, but they draw fans from just about the entire nation. Irish Catholics and catholics in general still follow Notre Dame from all over the nation. . .if they didn't, NBC wouldn't keep renewing their contract with them.

ND won't do it and JoePa doesn't want them. Or they don't want him. Whole story on this yesterday.
Its about the money.

The creepy part is not the guy in the hat. The creepy part is the pseudo-Nazi salute Schiano is throwing out there.

"Lucrative championship game" is right. In addition to generating revenue it extends the season and keeps teams moving up in the polls. It also gives Heisman voters an extended look at candidates - while just as deserving candidates from the Pac 10 and Big 10 sit idle. If your conference doesn't play a champ game your teams and players are subject to the old out-of-sight-out-of-mind adage which could hurt with regards to rankings and awards.

Since ND football will never join a conference, due to the money they get from the program and do not have to share, Rutgers is the obvious choice. I could see Pitt but I do not see the Big East letting either team go very easily, especially Pitt with the basketball success. If the Big Ten expands how about a smaller team from a non-BCS conference? The school would obviously love the cash flow increase and the Big Ten and can have the pick of the litter.

I don't think this impacts the BCS title game so much. It might have a slight impact on rankings, but one spot is guaranteed in the BCS and the Big 10 has been VERY successful getting one of the at large berths practically every year. I don't recall the big 10 champ ever dropping out of the top 2 and missing out on the championship game simply because of the layoff. (example please if they did).
Adding a championship game will keep the winning team more focused and sharp for the bowls since the layoff is shorter. However, the conference runner-up will be droppped form the at-large berth frequently due to the extra loss.

If every conference had a champ game we'd be one step closer to a true playoff system.

Not trying to be argumentative.. just philosophical...
Right now each conference has its own method and criteria for determining conference champs. What difference does playing the title game actually make?

I can't help but laugh every time I see this picture. It's not because of the cowboy behind him, either. He looks SO much like a male cheerleader in this picture. The male cheerleader pose of one hand on a hip (photo cut off, but I still picture this) and the other hand in the air making a fist. So cheerleadery.
