Khabibulin, Havlat leaving Blackhawks?

As the Blackhawks packed up their belongings at the United Center on Friday, goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin saw the teammates leaving the building as potential Stanley Cup champions in 2010. The question for Khabibulin and Martin Havlat -- both unrestricted free agents -- is whether they'll be part of making that happen. The Blackhawks expect to welcome back the core of the team that advanced to the Western Conference finals before bowing out on Wednesday with a 4-1 series loss to the Red Wings. But that doesn't mean a few locker room name plates won't change.

It's hard to say what impact those two have on the locker room, but quality veterans are a must with such a young (but extremely talented) nucleus. It's going to be really tough to keep Khabibulin around with Huet making the money that he does, though.

Keyword for Havlat this past season was "Redemption": Known to be as dense as porcelain he goes 29 goals in 81 games this season so redemption achieved. To choose one or the other, keep Havlat. It makes no sense to shove a combine 10mil slot on 2 goalies. the bulin wall might also have redeemed himself late in the season but it's just not economically sound.

I don't know if Havlat's heart is still in Chicago but one thing's for certain, his brain still is, smeared all of the United Center ice, he wasn't looking where he was going and hit a wall, a Kronwall!

well wingsfan...idk how much you would know about BLACKHAWK hockey, but his heart is in chicago now. this is the best team he's had in his career and its up and coming. he wants to come back, the only thing is, do they want the money they deserve or take a paycut to stay with the team KNOWING they got Kaner, Tazer, and Other free agents to take care of. Id rather see versteeg get the big contract than Havlat. He only had one good season. and Versteeg shows alot of promise.

Meteora 16, just having alittle fun, personally i'm glad the Hawks are a great team again, it's a great rivalry and i'm lookiing forward to many battles next year as i'm sure the fans in Chi-town are too!

That's pretty funny. hahaha
If anything, keep Havat so he can pick up the rest of his belongings next year he left on the ice. Seriously, he is a solid veteran presence on a very young team. Next year the UFA selections will be much better in the off season then the crop that's available this year.
Khabby has to go. Too expensive.

they should re sign khab and trade huet

No one will take his contract...Khabby has to go.

As a Wings fan, I really like the Hawks and I hope they continue to stay strong for the Wings sake. No question that Chicago has some tough choices to make over the summer. I hope Havlat stays, but I can't see either Huet or Khabby being their answer in net. Khabby was better, but Huet has the contract right now and it's a big one that, unfortunately, they won't be able to trade.

The best addition the Hawks have made lately, without question, is the person that never gets ice time, Scotty Bowman! He is worth his knowledge and experience in spades, and within two years he will have the Hawks sorted out and well on their way. He needs to talk to Campbell about his on-ice choices though, so that Brian understands why you always take the risk out of the play and stay with the smart play.

I think that the Hawks have too much money tied up in goaltending, so I won't be surprised if the Bulin Wall is playing somewhere else next year or retires

Wingsfan #1, I am not sure if I'm mad at your comment or jealous of the Wings??? Anyway, it was a funny comment and hope at this point the Wings win it all (hard to say that). The Hawks are back but need to continue to improve if they want to stay there. They will catch nobody "off guard" at this point.

Khabibulin is one of the best goalies in the league. They need to resign him.

May 30, 2009  03:30 PM ET

In essence, the article says absolutely nothing.

May 30, 2009  04:04 PM ET

khabby will leave, havlat stays..they sign some snarl and pop and it's on.

May 30, 2009  05:57 PM ET

I say keep havlat, lose khabibulin because huet is younger and just as good, and use the the space that khabibulin was taking up to bolster the lineup. Chicago is going to be a great team over the next few years as long as they keep their core. They have a great core similar to the penguins and they will soon tap into the stanley cup potential that the penguins have the past two seasons.

May 31, 2009  08:59 AM ET

The Hawks need to keep Havlat because he is a presence in a young locker room. I think the Hawks made a big mistake by singing Huet to suh a big deal. He had a good season in a contract year. the Hawks also have Corey Crawford, who dominated the AHL this season. The Hawks would be better off keeping Khabibulin and Crawford as the 2 goalies so when Khabibulin is done, Crawford can step in. But they need to find a taker for Huet hefty contract.

May 31, 2009  11:22 AM ET

Marty needs to go somewhere where there is no contact. the Swiss elite league is made for him.

May 31, 2009  11:54 AM ET

I think the hawks wont go as far with out them.

May 31, 2009  09:04 PM ET

Havlat only plays when he has a contract on the line! He is SOFT
