Westphal, Rambis top Kings' list

Boston Celtics' associate head coach Tom Thibodeau, the third candidate to interview for the Kings' head-coaching spot, appears to lag in the race. He trails Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis and is even further behind former Phoenix and Seattle coach Paul Westphal. Eddie Jordan -- initially believed to be the leading candidate -- agreed Friday to take the 76ers' head-coaching job. Rambis is expected to travel to Las Vegas soon for his interview, as the Kings have received permission from the Lakers to do so before the NBA Finals begin Thursday. How that fits into Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie's schedule remains to be seen.

Rambis and Westphal both deserve better than Sacramento.

I hope Rambis gets a shot. He's paid his dues over a long period of time. Westphal, though decent, is a re-tread.

Westphal ?
I mean he had some nice days with Phoenix....
but he's been out of the league as a HC for almost 10 years

I have NO IDEA what the point of bringing back these old re-treads
- why not just give a young guy a chance since the team will suck

The Big Question for Rambis will be; does he wait one more year under Phil in LA, then maybe becomes the Lakers Head coach when Phil retires

That would be the smart choice. He cannot suceed in Sacramento, and after failing miserably, it could be years before he gets another shot. This team eats coaches. Ask Reggie Theus.

Didn't Rambis coach before? Didn't he takeover a Lakers team but didn't get very far? Didn't he coached in the WNBA and DLeague but didn't get anywhere? I think Rambis would not be a good head coach. His name is in consideration because he is an assistant to a good team and a great coach. Michael Cooper would be a better head coach then any former Lakers that hasn't become a head coach in the NBA yet.

he coached the Lakers for like 8 minutes pre-Phil
- had a good record too 24-13
but that doesn't really count

The Lakers vs Magic will be very intriguing. There are mismatches everywhere. Whoever takes advantage of those mismathces will win the ring. Kobe will have to show up in every game because the Magic will not double him just like they didn't double Lebron. The Magic has more balance all around. They have multiple players stepping up and that's including their bench. Kobe's supporting cast have to really step up or else they will be like Cleveland. The Lakers defense will be spread out because of the Magic's 3 point threats from multiple players. Pau and Bynum have to really step up and they have to make Dwight work really hard and get him into foul trouble. This is where the Lakers have the major advantage. The Cavs didn't have low post players that's why they were one dimensional and easy to defend.

Nice post.

Coaching will be very important in this series.

Unfortunately someone will sell their soul to take this job because it's an easy few mil for a year to a year and a half's worth of work. We can't all be so discerning.

Despite their presence in Vegas the Maloofs know nothing about gambling.

The contracts on the book for SAC are horrendous even with Abdur-Rahim's salary being gracefully waived. Udrih + Kenny Thomas is like burning money.

That said the Kings did pull off a very successful salary burn with Chicago. If a coach were given a fair shot at continuity and rebuilding a la Mike Woodson this team can compete.

Most important is if the owners open up their wallets for FAs.

lol....did that really need to be said ?

Odom & pau guarding turk & lewis will be a MAJOR difference
-lets see if Bynum has the balls to play ball with Dwight
I don't want o hear anymore about his damn knees, that he's
'still working himself into shape', blah, blah blah......

Can't a Laker headed to Sacow, or the Kings hiring one...

May 31, 2009  02:30 PM ET

The magic were barly out scoring the cavs with a one man sho, now they have to play the Lakers they also wont get the 3pt looks that they were getting before LAKERS IN 6

May 31, 2009  02:58 PM ET

I heard Tom Thibodeau is more of a Xs and Os coach and doesn't communicate with his players well?

I second this...he wants to be the eventual coach of the Lakers, but Bus only seems to want to hire experienced coaches who've already proven themselves as winners. If he coaches the Kings for awhile then maybe he'll get a shot after Phil retires.

He'd actually probably be the third choice behind Byron Scott and Avery Johnson.

Rambis- could not even get to the finals with the exact same team that Phil won 3 titles in a row with.

Westphal - the original 7 seconds or less offensive coach. He has won games but never really gotten over the hump as a coach. re-tread.
