Why Stars owner hired Nieuwendyk

Joe Nieuwendyk is the right man at the right time, Stars owner Tom Hicks said Sunday after announcing the former Stars player is the new general manager of the team. Hicks said he reassessed the idea of having two men as co-GMs -- the only team in pro sports with that setup -- and decided to reassign Brett Hull to the position of Executive Vice President and Alternate Governor and Jackson to Director of Scouting and Player Development. That allows Nieuwendyk, who was a rising star in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, to come in and take over as the sole voice in the GM chair. Nieuwendyk, 42, retired in 2006 after a 20-year NHL career and has served in front office of the Panthers and Maple Leafs.

Good for Joe, he deserves this shot as an all-time good guy and, from everything reported over the last year & a half he is a very capable front office man. Good for him getting out of Toronto where he would have only been a spare part as well. Too bad he went to Dallas though - I'd be actually cheering for him to succeed if he hadn't signed on with the Stars...

Good deal

great career move; getting out of Toronto. he will have to rebuild the Stars through the draft which could take 3 - 4 years. hopefully they gave him the terms on his contract to see this through

Joe has a lot of fans here in Dallas, I glad to see him back here!

They hired him because everybody knows Joe is a nice guy...besides, he should do a good job there and knows the game and how to manage a front office.
I think the Stars did the right move here and Joe is just such a nice guy...

Rebuild the Stars? Are you nuts? They were incredibly injury riddled last season. That is the only reason they did so poorly this year.

When your #1 F + #1 D miss basically the whole year and your #1 G has an off year (while being one of the league's elite for a long time), it does not mean its time to rebuild. They went to the WCF a year earlier and they did not suddenly lose their talent.

I like the signing. I htink he will be good for it.

overall I laugh though because most people on t & r trash the roy rumors in Colorado, whereas I think it will be almost unanymous that Joe is a good signing for Dallasd. Roy has alot more substantial front office experience than Joe does.

Either way, it`s a good move.
