Mangini's bus ride angers Browns rookies

07:08 AM ET 06.01 | Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Mary Kay Cabot firmly stands by her story that former Jets coach Eric Mangini really gave the Browns rookies no choice in the matter when they "voluntarily'' took a 10-hour bus trip to work at his charity football camp in Hartford, Conn., Saturday. The Browns are in damage control, saying Mangini, who'll ride the bus back with players, didn't twist the players' arms. But again, Cabot told me she spoke with agents and family members of the 19 players and all are livid. In fact, the league and NFLPA are reportedly looking into the matter to see if Mangini violated any rules.

They're rookies... They need to suck it up.

No they don't need to suck it up....nobody needs to be forced to take a 10 hour bus trip to work at a football camp. If Mangini wanted them, he could have at least afforded to charter a plane.

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.

Hundreds of undrafted and unsigned players would do anything to be included on this bus ride....

Sounds like the worst bus ride since Freddy Kreuger was driving around Elm Street.

Wow thanks for the history lesson. So then I guess if your boss made you take a 10 hour bus ride nobody would hear you complain right? I'm sure some of these guys would have volunteered if asked if for no other reason then to try to scuk upto the boss. But since we do now have planes and they charter them for all kinds of superfluous reasons, why make these huge men take a 10 hour bus ride?

Please, Mangini, yo don't need to put your stamp on the franchise by making rookies come on long bus trips to help at some camp.

Plus, It probably was 5 hours going and 5 coming back... I'm sure we're not talking about a school bus here, without A.C. This bus had all the bells and whistles from internet access to private t.v. monitors...

"camp benefits low-income and high-risk youngsters in the Hartford area, where Mangini grew up."
Is it really such a bad thing to give back a little now and then. I do not see how this would be a good cause , especially right now, for the Players Union to take up. It only makes them looked like spoiled, pampered brats and Mangini will come out looking like a man who cares..

Exactly....
Why would he charter a plane for a charity event for rookies who may not make the team during a recession?

I agree but at the same time were the aware of it, did they have adequate notice etc etc etc. If you show up one day at work and the boss says, "load em up" you might take issue.
You know the NFLPA is going to take up the issue regardless. They have to look supportive of the players.
Personally I would love to have had such an opportunity to help out the kids. That's just me though.

The NFLPA really has no choice but to take up the cause. They just need to do it from a "process' view and not a "result" view. The idea was great, the way it was done was not.
