Calipari reaches out to UK boosters

08:43 AM ET 06.01 | While the basketball world wonders if John Calipari will become the first coach to have two Final Four appearances vacated, the Kentucky coach can be assured of making a more uplifting bit of history this year. He's agreed to become the first UK basketball coach to speak to the Bluegrass Kiwanis Club. Member Paul Bimschleger's competitive spirit led to this bit of history. He noticed that Calipari had agreed to speak to the Lexington Rotary Club in the fall. The next morning, Bimschleger called the UK basketball office. "We were going to raise our hand and say we're not chopped liver," he said. The Lexington Rotary Club has about 400 members, which dwarfs the Bluegrass Kiwanis Club's 45 members. Yet, Bimschleger felt fair was fair. So he called to invite Calipari to speak in either September or October. But deep down, Bimschleger had little hope of the UK coach accepting the invitation. "No one from the basketball office has ever come," he said. "I'm talking even a trainer."

Be careful guys, what the mean by reaching out is he will be reaching under the table looking for some slush money.

Calipari reaches out to UK boosters...for some coin to get new players.

The shadiest guy in all of college basketball. Congrats UK on a great hire. He has never been to a Final Four that the school was allowed to keep. BRAVO!

Maybe he needs to get Jerry Tarkanian's lawyer. Sounds like someone in the NCAA office is gunning to get him. (Doesn't mean he didn't do anything wrong, however....)

At least he is a man of his word......March 27, 2009...."Memphis is where I want to coach.???

Ooops, sorry, I was thinking of someone else.

Birds of a feather flock together. Isn't it ironic that Tark's lead recruiter in the 90's is JC's lead recruiter.

June 1, 2009  11:33 PM ET

Is it possible that Calipari has to step down, before he even takes the sidelines once at uk???

June 2, 2009  01:15 AM ET

Change of temperament or panicked damage control?

I will live for the romantics and cynics to debate.

June 2, 2009  02:33 AM ET

He's reaching out to UK boosters to get more money to buy top quality recruits.

jayhawk its a jealous game and even more when your #1 pre=season is taken away...i hate you got the other one of uh, coach calipari's "suspect" recruits but hey, we wanted to give you something to keep you square!

June 2, 2009  10:40 PM ET

What is it Jayhawkfan11? Jealousy runs rampant in this game so get use to it if you're new...Check your own backyard and we'll bring the title back to the real home of basketball for a few years.

Don't be mad just because UK is getting ready to kick everyone's ass. Don't blame Memphis's mistakes on Cal. And I'm sure Billy Donovan or Roy Williams or **** Bag Coach K did everything 100% by the book as well. Suck it!

June 4, 2009  12:03 PM ET

Whah whah whah. You all sound like little cry babies. I hate to burst your bubbles but Calapari did nothing wrong. The NCAA let some teeneager and his high schoole dupe them. The NCAA cleared Rose AND Rose had legit scholarship offers from a dozen big time colleges. He just happen to choose Memphis because Calapari plays a pro style, dribble drive offense. Get over it losers. UK is BAAACCKKKK!!!

The honest fact is John Calapari has been a head coach in Division 1 basketball for 17 years. And as of today, the man HAS NEVER been charged with ONE NOT ONE single violation by the NCAA. UK's old Coach Pitino has 8. Now is it possible Calapari is the cheater and dirty coach everyone accuses him of being and he is just the teflon don and untouchable. Yeah I guess anything is possible. Or is it possible that as he came up a young, hungry coach, he has just taken a few chances on players that coaches at the big schools like Kentucky or UNC passed on? Who knows. But now that he has the history and facilities of UK to go along with his personality and style, something tells me he will not need to push the envelope as hard to get top 10 recruiting classes from now on...

June 5, 2009  12:28 PM ET

damn, gokyblue, that must be some good kool-aid...but you need to face it, UK hired a coach of questionable morals and ethics. i am sure you are not that naive to believe everything happening around him was done without his knowledge and/or consent. you would think they learned their lesson with sutton. every UK fan i have talked to has feverishly defended calipari like he was Jesus reincarnate...it reeks of desperateness

OK rey, I give up. Who are you talking about?

None of the current staff of Antiqua, Robic, Strickland, or even Pastner have ever been associated with Tarkanian or UNLV.

June 5, 2009  03:26 PM ET

You know, it's not the coach who is the problem. With both UMASS and Memphis (and others), it's the NCAA's one and done rule. They are forcing players who are not college students to be college students. Any coach these days who recruits guys who are likely to be one and done is taking a risk. They have had agents approaching them from the time they were freshmen in high school. Calipari hasn't done anything wrong that the other top tier coaches haven't done, since they were recruiting the same players.
