Phillies in market for big-name pitcher

05:44 AM ET 06.02 | The Phillies were scouring the trade market for starting pitching help even before Brett Myers became the latest big-name casualty with the increasingly fashionable torn hip labrum. Teammate Chase Utley beat the four-month prediction for him to return from the same injury, but Phillies people understandably worry it may be more difficult for a pitcher to come back as quickly. In any case, the world champions are aiming high now in their quest for a starter, with Jake Peavy appearing to top their list of desirable aces, perhaps followed by Roy Oswalt, Cliff Lee and Erik Bedard.

Erik Bedard is a big name pitcher?

June 2, 2009  08:15 AM ET

Why do they need any of these guys? They have Chan Ho Park.....

June 2, 2009  08:26 AM ET

Peavy's like the Prom Queen- everyone wants him, no one seems able to get him.

June 2, 2009  08:52 AM ET

...I think, given their pitching, the Phillies ought to take whatever they can get and not worry about how big the name is.

he is in the bullpen and his replacement j.a. haap is pitching very well, which creates another problem. They just brought up bastardo and he is a lefty giving them a 4 lefty rotation with blanton being the only righty. Which is why I would bet against them trading for cliff lee or any left handed pitcher.

Yes right after Peavy, Oswalt, and Lee.

Well if it's doable the 1st choice should be Oswalt.

The Phillies should not try to acquire Peavy, too much left on his contract, too many injury concerns. Plus, it will cost to much in the number of prospects you will have to give up!

phillies have a ton of prospects right now...position players and pitchers. they are built to win now and in the next 3-4 years with everyone under contract. peavy and hamels would be best pitching in nl by far and just about guarantee them into the nlcs again.

their pitching isnt horrible... they just started slow. it's been known fact that starting rotation has been the Phil's weak point since... well, for quite a while.

personally, i think they should tinker with the idea of trying out one of the pen guys, as now with Romero back off of suspension, we have 4 solid relievers in Condry, Madson, Romero, and Lidge.... i know it wont happen, but its a thought.

Lee is not going anywhere...no substance to this bullshyte

Peavy, Lee, then Oswalt.

Well I'm in agreement with chaser that we should go out and get a right handed stud pitcher if we can first.

Sorry man, Lee will be gone before the trade deadline, just a matter of where.

hate to tell you but its a horrible thought, none of those guys are starters. Madson was in the minors but he has proved to be lights out as a setup guy and is going to eventually take over as closer probably after next season when lidge's contract is up. the other guys are 1 or 2 inning guys at most. they are going to use a stop gap guy bastardo already came up from the minors until they make a trade.

The Yankees need relievers, not starters.
