Stars to change spending strategy
It may be a very good thing that Joe Nieuwendyk is not emphasizing free agency in his plans to return the Stars to elite status. Nieuwendyk might not have the flexibility, even if he wanted to go aggressively into the marketplace. Owner Tom Hicks indicated that while he has not yet set a payroll target for next season, the Stars are unlikely to approach the salary cap, a change from past years. "There's a trend throughout hockey that people are not necessarily spending to the cap automatically and we won't either," Hicks said, adding that he plans to set his target in about three weeks.

Over paying UFA's and stretching the cap space is not a recipe for success in today's NHL. Finally the message is sinking in with the owners and GM's. Times are changing and hopefully the economy will be much brighter a year from now for everyone's sake.

the days of giving the 30 something free agents millions i believe is over. build through the draft and develop your farm hands and go looking for the diamonds in the rough that are unscouted. these guys that are on their 3rd contract very rarely come in and make a difference. most are looking not to get hurt and ride it out.

This is a trend based on the "home grown" principle that has proven successful for some of the clubs that we are seeing in the playoffs. Although it is more entertaining because you get to see the players grow on the team the clubs don't necessarily make the marketing $ that they would if they were to tradeor sign the player as a UFA/RFA. Personally, I like the idea that the clubs are seeing the benefit of raising a team. Perhaps there will be a better sense of team which should make for some more competitive hockey, and the draft will be more interesting (not that it was ever lackluster.)

Dallas doesn't need to increase payroll. They need to get healthy. If a team pushes the Wings to 6 games in the conference finals one year, and misses the playoffs the next year, coming in 12th place, with essentially the only difference in personnel being retirements of Mattias Norstrom and Stu Barnes (love 'em to death, but come on), and the trading of Hagman and Jokinen (love em to death, but come on), then when looking for answers you have to cast your eyes towards the infirmary. Is it an excuse? No.... well, yeah. You just cant argue with that many devastating injuries. Dallas is right back in contention next year.

The Stars are a pretty good franchise, I have faith in them. They seem to be the one bright spot on Hicks' record of ownership
