Orlando Magic all-star center Dwight Howard, publicly addressing his long-term future for the first time, told the Sentinel on Monday that he'd love to finish his career in Orlando. As long as Orlando wants him, he says. "It is an interesting question," Howard said. "You know what? I'll be here as long as the fans want me to be here. They have a lot of do with it." Howard, 23, is a five-year veteran and has four more years left on his $85-million contract.

If his game continues to develop, this guy is a freak!!!

June 2, 2009  08:14 AM ET

i wonder what he will be like in ten years???but right now...with his current team, the Magic are looking good for the next few, especially considering Nelson is out.

June 2, 2009  08:20 AM ET

He is saying that now but if the Magic are not going to give him big bucks then he will be playing somewhere else. I don't think the Magic would make the same mistake they made w/ Shaq.

June 2, 2009  08:23 AM ET

Becareful what you wish for Dwight... the honeymoon maybe cut short. Hedo, Courtney Lee, Gortat and Rafer Alston will soon be gone because of money... plus you sent the King home crying to his momma and defeated the green monsters in Boston.

You have now made some deadly enemies but your weapon supply doesn't look too good for the future.

How will the west be won?

His 85 mil is guaranteed. He can put on more weight than Eddy Curry or smoke more weed than pacman... he still gets paid. But he's a man of God so barring an injury from above he'll continue to be a force in the league.

None of you guys really know how their salary will play out in the future; If we win (and even if we don't I wager) the boys will probably all get a higher salary because of the following:

Local support goes WAY UP when we're deep in the playoffs. I know, I've witness people who never watch the sport run around with Magic apparel on at my school. Even my girlfriend wants to know the score, and she hates it when I do that kind of thing.

New arena? awesome. State of the art? Even better. Ticket sales? Through the roof. Why? We've got a good team.

Because we're successful, you can expect Weide to dish out more money, since more money is coming in from merch and ticket sales.

This is all assuming that the guy is smart and knows how to ride the popularity without being frugal.

June 2, 2009  08:33 AM ET

I mean, when their contracts end.

come on- he'll get re-upped for max until he is 32-34 years old.........
THEN he might leave.

That's a ridiculous statement

June 2, 2009  09:01 AM ET

Regardless of how much Howard likes FL and the Magic I have to say that every player says this UNTIL they sign with another team for more money. I mean, look at the past and name one great player who said they wanted to leave the team they were on when the team was going to the finals. This is a pretty idiotic story in my opinion. Of course Howard will stay.... for now.

June 2, 2009  09:11 AM ET

This guy deserves all the best.

June 2, 2009  09:12 AM ET

Howard's a straight up beast i agree he should remain with my second team magic but imagine him with miami.
It dont hurt to imagine!

June 2, 2009  09:13 AM ET

Given the timing, that's actually a pretty dumb question. As they prepare for the Championship finals, what did they expect him to say? At 23, Howard will continue to get better, and there's no telling what might happen in the next 5 years.

June 2, 2009  09:14 AM ET

I didn't like seeing him oust my Celtics, but since KG wasn't there, the Magic were more likely to beat the Cavs. Which they did.

Let's now see how good Freaky #12 is. Can he do the same against LA as he did against the two of last year East-finalists?

If he does, then He's the real Superman(Shaq who?) and he's worth all of his 21,2 million a year, and why leave your team when you have the money and(for now) the victory?

If he doesn't, then the Magic will have to make adjustments but not major ones. Not trading him anyway. Right now, besides youth and lack of playoff experience, they haven't shown many weaknesses. If any.

How can that be a ridiculous statement when the one guy you have been wanting for the longest time in Lebron might do the same thing? And it happened too many times in the past. You don't know if the Magic might go cheap again.

quoting you DIRECTLY from #3
if the Magic are not going to give him big bucks

if the MAGIC aren't...is the key words....
the magic ABSOLUTELY will offer the max-
just as Cleveland will OFFER the max
- whether he or LBJ TAKES it is a different matter- but they're going to OFFER it

I don't know if the West(should we say Kobe?) will be won, but if anyone has to beat the Lakers, it must be Magic.

As we all saw, the Cavs showed their weakness in the East Finals, as they couldn't find an answer to Dwight Howard(not saying anyone would have, but if KG...) and only tried to rely on LeBron's skills(which are real, no doubt) to save games that were lost during 3 quarters.

But the main factor is, the Magic have won both season games against the Lakers, including one IN LA.

but they cannot sign elsewhere for MORE
- the current team can offer teh MOST

a case in point- a few years ago with Boozer-
Cleveland offered a MODEST contract- utah completely BLEW
them out of the water- but the cavs still could match- they
decided not to.......
had cleveland offered him a max-type deal thhat offer would've been the biggest

Never say never. The Mavs were dumb enough to let Nash walk for nothing.
